Onychothemis coccinea est un rare Libellulidae dont le genre comporte 7 esp\u00e8ces. \u00c0 Born\u00e9o, seul O. culminicola<\/a> est \u00e9galement pr\u00e9sent. On l’en s\u00e9pare <\/em>par l’abdomen rouge, marqu\u00e9 d’anneaux sombres, alors que ceux de notre esp\u00e8ce sont tr\u00e8s l\u00e9gers. De plus, O. culminicola montre des yeux verts et une tache m\u00e9tallis\u00e9e noire sur le front et un thorax plus sombre. Il en est cependant bien proche au point que Laidlaw, 1920, l’avait appel\u00e9 O. culminicola celebensis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lieftinck \u00e9crit qu’il est \u00ab\u00a0un peu plus \u00e9lanc\u00e9 [que O. culminicola], on peut le distinguer d’un coup d’\u0153il par la couleur plus vive du thorax et par l’abdomen enti\u00e8rement non marqu\u00e9<\/em> et d’une teinte rouge \u00e9carlate brillante\u00a0\u00bb. Mais plus loin, on lit : \u00ab\u00a0Le Dr Ris, dans la monographie de Selys, a d\u00e9j\u00e0 attir\u00e9 l’attention sur la remarquable uniformit\u00e9 des organes g\u00e9nitaux et des appendices anaux des Onychothemis, ces organes n’\u00e9tant d’aucune utilit\u00e9 pour distinguer les esp\u00e8ces. Je suis maintenant en mesure de confirmer l’affirmation de Ris, car une comparaison directe des p\u00e9nis (diss\u00e9qu\u00e9s des corps de culminicola et de coccinea) a r\u00e9v\u00e9l\u00e9 que m\u00eame la forme du troisi\u00e8me segment p\u00e9nien, avec ses crochets lat\u00e9raux noirs robustes, fortement chitinis\u00e9s et comprim\u00e9s lat\u00e9ralement, et ses deux filaments apicaux recourb\u00e9s, est pratiquement identique chez les deux esp\u00e8ces.\u00a0\u00bb
Ceci pourrait laisser planer un doute sur la validit\u00e9 de cette esp\u00e8ce, car les abdomens et les thorax ne sont pas si \u00e9loign\u00e9s.

Il est aussi assez proche de Orthetrum chrysis, dont la base des ailes est ambr\u00e9e et n’a pas de lignes jaunes sur le thorax.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Son abdomen mesure 31 mm, sa longueur totale est d’environ 48 mm.

Lieftinck ne pr\u00e9cise pas pr\u00e9cis\u00e9ment dans quel milieu il l’a rencontr\u00e9.
A. G. Orr, 2003 (2) nous dit qu’on trouve O. culminicola principalement sur les rivi\u00e8res rapides en for\u00eat vierge de dipt\u00e9rocarpus vari\u00e9s. Onychothemis coccinea se trouverait plut\u00f4t sur les rivi\u00e8res plus lentes ; nous les avons trouv\u00e9s tous les deux sur la m\u00eame rivi\u00e8re, assez large<\/a>, avec quelques rapides par endroits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00c9tymologie<\/strong>
Onychothemis<\/strong> de onycho<\/em>, pour griffe<\/em>, ongle<\/em>, talon<\/em> et de Themis. Themis, est la d\u00e9esse grecque de l\u2019ordre et de la justice, qui a \u00e9t\u00e9 utilis\u00e9 de nombreuses fois depuis Hagen (1861), et Brauer a suivi la mode en 1868 quand il a cr\u00e9\u00e9 ce genre. Le nom de la d\u00e9esse de l\u2019ordre est particuli\u00e8rement bien adapt\u00e9 \u00e0 la taxonomie, science qui vise \u00e0 d\u00e9crire et ordonner les familles, genres et esp\u00e8ces.
Lorsque Brauer d\u00e9crit ce genre (3), il donne un caract\u00e8re distinctif :\u00a0\u00bbtarses sans dents, tibias avec de longues \u00e9pines\u00a0\u00bb. Ainsi, les tarses, ou griffes, sans dents, sont \u00e0 l’origine de ce nom.
Coccinea<\/strong>, du latin coccineus<\/em>, qui signifie \u00e9carlate<\/em> et se rapporte bien s\u00fbr \u00e0 la couleur de l’abdomen de cet odonate.
Dans sa description de l’esp\u00e8ce, Lieftinck pr\u00e9cise : \u00ab\u00a0Tarsal claws toothless. – \u00ab\u00a0Griffes des tarses sans dents.\u00a0\u00bb.

Son nom anglais est Orange riverdarter, qui souligne la couleur de l’abdomen, il est vrai, plus orange que rouge. Cependant, O. culminicola n’a pas de nom vernaculaire, et pr\u00e9sente une couleur de fond de l’abdomen tout aussi orange…<\/p>\n\n\n\n
