Onychothemis culminicola est un tr\u00e8s beau Libellulidae que j’avais eu la chance de rencontrer en Malaisie P\u00e9ninsulaire<\/a>.
\u00c0 Born\u00e9o, ma seule rencontre avec l’esp\u00e8ce s’est produite en fin de matin\u00e9e, sur une rivi\u00e8re foresti\u00e8re \u00e0 fond de sable et de galets, parsem\u00e9e de rochers cr\u00e9ant des rapides, la Timuoh River<\/a>. Plus ou moins large, plus ou moins ombr\u00e9e, elle offre une multitude de biotopes abritant de nombreuses esp\u00e8ces : Libellago stictica, L. semiopaca, Heliocypha biseriata, Dyspahea dimidiata, Neurobasis longipes, Rhinagrion borneense, Prodasineura verticalis, Argiocnemis rubescens, Pseudagrion perfuscatum, Orthetrum schneideri, O. testaceum, Onychothemis coccinea… Et j’imagine que cette \u00e9num\u00e9ration est tr\u00e8s incompl\u00e8te, car le temps maussade en d\u00e9but de matin\u00e9e est enfin devenu beau, notre premi\u00e8re journ\u00e9e de soleil, et sans pluie, depuis six jours.

S’il ressemble fortement \u00e0 son cousin O. coccinea<\/a> pr\u00e9sent aussi sur la rivi\u00e8re, il s’en distingue par son front m\u00e9tallique noir, ses yeux verts, son thorax marqu\u00e9 identiquement de bandes jaunes, mais plus sombre. Enfin, son abdomen rouge est marqu\u00e9 lat\u00e9ralement \u00e0 l’union de chaque segment d’un triangle noir, qui se poursuit sur la face dorsale par un anneau sombre, alors que l’abdomen de O. coccinea<\/a> est \u00e0 peu pr\u00e8s compl\u00e8tement rouge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Il mesure 45 \u00e0 47 mm au total et se plait sur des rameaux surplombant la rivi\u00e8re, depuis lesquels il peut surveiller son territoire et chasser les intrus.
Sa distribution g\u00e9ographique est large, depuis le Sulawesi, Sumatra, Java, Bali and Born\u00e9o, \u00e0 travers la Malaisie P\u00e9ninsulaire et la Tha\u00eflande, jusqu’au sud de la Chine. Sa pr\u00e9sence est confirm\u00e9e au Laos et Cambodge, mais peut-\u00eatre pas au Vietnam. Il est signal\u00e9 en Chine, \u00e0 l’extr\u00eame sud du Yunnan.

\u00c9tymologie<\/strong>
Onychothemis<\/strong>\u00a0de\u00a0onycho<\/em>, pour\u00a0griffe<\/em>,\u00a0ongle<\/em>,\u00a0talon<\/em>\u00a0et de Themis. Themis, est la d\u00e9esse grecque de l\u2019ordre et de la justice, qui a \u00e9t\u00e9 utilis\u00e9 de nombreuses fois depuis Hagen (1861), et Brauer a suivi la mode en 1868 quand il a cr\u00e9\u00e9 ce genre. Le nom de la d\u00e9esse de l\u2019ordre est particuli\u00e8rement bien adapt\u00e9 \u00e0 la taxonomie, science qui vise \u00e0 d\u00e9crire et ordonner les familles, genres et esp\u00e8ces.
Lorsque Brauer d\u00e9crit ce genre (1), il donne un caract\u00e8re distinctif :\u00a0\u00ab\u00a0tarses sans dents, tibias avec de longues \u00e9pines\u00a0\u00bb. Ainsi, les tarses, ou griffes, sans dents, sont \u00e0 l\u2019origine de ce nom.
Culminicola<\/strong> du latin culmen<\/em> pour sommet<\/em> et d’un d\u00e9riv\u00e9 du verbe colere<\/em> signifiant habiter<\/em>. Pour l’instant, je ne suis pas parvenu \u00e0 lire la description de F\u00f6rster (2), mais je suppose qu’il a trouv\u00e9 l’esp\u00e8ce en \u00ab\u00a0altitude\u00a0\u00bb ou au moins pas en plaine, o\u00f9 semble confin\u00e9 son cousin O. coccinea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
