C’est au cours de notre deuxi\u00e8me journ\u00e9e de prospection sur une rivi\u00e8re, puis dans la for\u00eat tourbeuse<\/a> (avec Rory Dow) du parc national Maludam que j’ai r\u00e9ussi \u00e0 photographier ce jeune m\u00e2le Orchithemis xanthosoma. Et cela a \u00e9t\u00e9 un moment tr\u00e8s frustrant comme on peut s’en douter en constatant la pi\u00e8tre qualit\u00e9 des photos ; j’ai d\u00fb utiliser un (bon) boitier de secours sur lequel \u00e9tait mont\u00e9 un tr\u00e8s mauvais zoom que je n’utilise en principe que pour de la photo de voyage, tellement bas de gamme que l’on ne peut pas parvenir \u00e0 faire la mise au point manuelle correcte. J’\u00e9tais en effet tomb\u00e9 dans l’eau noire de la rivi\u00e8re la veille, ruinant mon mat\u00e9riel photo.
Noter l’importante saillie des organes g\u00e9nitaux secondaires sous le deuxi\u00e8me segment abdominal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Il n’y a quasiment pas de photos de m\u00e2le de cette esp\u00e8ce sur le Web, on ne trouve, sauf celle-ci<\/a>, que des photos de femelles. Les m\u00e2les matures sont sombres, comme semblent le devenir \u00e9galement les vieilles femelles. Laidlaw (1) a eu en main un m\u00e2le dans un stade interm\u00e9diaire, le thorax noir velout\u00e9 d\u00e9grad\u00e9 en jaune dor\u00e9 vers l’avant, un autre compl\u00e9tement sombre.
Leurs ailes sont tr\u00e8s fines, le champ disco\u00efdal des ailes ne comporte qu’une seule rang\u00e9e de cellules aux ailes ant\u00e9rieures (1), ce que je parviens \u00e0 valider sur mes pauvres photos de ce m\u00e2le (ce qui le distingue des deux autres membres du genre, O. pruinans et pulcherrima (2)).
Laidlaw (1) nous dit que son abdomen, sans les appendices anaux, ne mesure que 18 mm, il doit atteindre 28 \u00e0 29 mm de longueur totale.

Heureusement, la veille, mon appareil photo \u00e9tait en grande forme et j’avais r\u00e9ussi \u00e0 faire de meilleures photos d’une femelle. On remarque que si le champ disco\u00efdal de l’aile post\u00e9rieure ne comporte qu’une seule cellule, environ jusqu’au nodus, celui de l’aile ant\u00e9rieure en comporte deux puis une, puis deux… Les crit\u00e8res de nervation valent ce qu’ils valent, ils sont souvent d\u00e9finis pour les m\u00e2les et ne s’appliquent pas forc\u00e9ment aux femelles.
Noter la courte expansion ventrale du S8, color\u00e9e en noir, comme les derniers segments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Orchithemis xanthosoma est rare, rarement vu et photographi\u00e9, sans doute parce qu’il faut aller le chercher dans un biotope bien particulier, les for\u00eats mar\u00e9cageuses acides (3), en somme un type de tourbi\u00e8re, ou la progression est difficile.

L’esp\u00e8ce est end\u00e9mique de Born\u00e9o o\u00f9 on la rencontre au centre et \u00e0 l’ouest du Kalimantan, \u00e0 Brunei et au Sarawak.

Noter la forme tr\u00e8s caract\u00e9ristique, en fuseau, de l’abdomen de la femelle ci-dessous (la m\u00eame …).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00c9tymologie<\/strong>
Orchithemis<\/strong> (Brauer,1878 (2)), est form\u00e9 du grec ancien orkhis<\/em> qui signifie testicule et de Themis<\/em>, qu’on peut consid\u00e9rer comme un suffixe d\u00e9terminant l’appartenance aux Libellulidae. Car Themis est la d\u00e9esse grecque de la justice et de l’ordre, qui a \u00e9t\u00e9 utilis\u00e9 de nombreuses fois depuis Hagen (1861) et qui est bien dans son r\u00f4le de surveiller les taxonomistes pour que l’ordre r\u00e8gne dans les classements qu’ils \u00e9tablissent. Comme je l’ai fait remarquer plus haut, les organes g\u00e9nitaux secondaires sous le S2 (l\u00e0 o\u00f9 le sperme est utilis\u00e9, mais pas l\u00e0 o\u00f9 il est produit, il n’y a donc pas de testicules strico sensu \u00e0 cet endroit…) sont particuli\u00e8rement d\u00e9velopp\u00e9s. Et Laidlaw \u00e9crit :\u00a0\u00bbSeen from the side, the hamulus of segment 2 projects more directly downwards from the abdomen than is the case in either of the other species of the genus.\u00a0\u00bb.
Xanthosoma<\/strong>, du grec xanthos<\/em> pour jaune<\/em> et soma<\/em> pour corps<\/em> ; comme on le constate, le jaune est la couleur dominante des sujets jeunes et matures, ils deviennent sombres en prenant de l’\u00e2ge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
