J’ai \u00e9t\u00e9 surpris de constater \u00e0 mon retour que ce n’\u00e9tait que la seconde fois que je rencontrais Orthetrum testaceum. Je ne me souvenais pas de sa r\u00e9partition et lors d’autres voyages en Asie, plus au nord, j’avais toujours peur de la confusion avec O. chrysis.
Les deux esp\u00e8ces sont pr\u00e9sentes au Sarawak. Mais comme toujours, quand on les voit l’une \u00e0 c\u00f4t\u00e9 de l’autre comme ci-dessous, il para\u00eet difficile de les confondre. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Orthetrum testaceum montre un abdomen plus rouge que rose, la face dorsale du thorax est color\u00e9e, jaune orang\u00e9, non marron terne, les yeux de la m\u00eame couleur et non pas gris-bleu. Le front de O. chrysis est sombre, parfois noir m\u00e9tallique, celui de Orthetrum testaceum jaune orang\u00e9. La tache alaire basale de ce dernier est aussi plus \u00e9tendue.
Ils sont \u00e0 peu pr\u00e8s de la m\u00eame taille et notre sujet mesure 43 \u00e0 48 mm (1).
Lors d’un voyage sur la P\u00e9ninsule Malaise, j’avais aussi fait ce comparatif<\/a>, au moins aussi efficace.

\u00c0 Singapour et l\u00e0 o\u00f9 l’anglais est utilis\u00e9…, il prend le nom de Scarlet Skimmer<\/em> (nom qui est souvent donn\u00e9 en Asie \u00e0 Crocothemis servilia ! Mais \u00e0 Singapour, ce dernier est nomm\u00e9 Common Scarlet). On l’appelle aussi Rufous-backed Skimmer, ce qui le diff\u00e9rencie bien de O. chrysis. Mais aussi Crimson dropwing ou Orange skimmer.
Nos amis anglais ont un petit probl\u00e8me avec les noms scientifiques et cherchent parfois \u00e0 s’approprier linguistiquement les noms des esp\u00e8ces animales sous pr\u00e9texte qu’ils sont plus faciles \u00e0 retenir pour les non-initi\u00e9s ; ils ont ainsi r\u00e9ussi \u00e0 cr\u00e9er une assez extraordinaire confusion pour de nombreuses esp\u00e8ces en Asie.
Bien s\u00fbr, leur langue est moins directement li\u00e9e au latin, et, il faut le reconna\u00eetre, les noms vernaculaires modernes \u00e9tablis par un comit\u00e9<\/em> scientifique<\/em> sont souvent tr\u00e8s efficaces et descriptifs de l’esp\u00e8ce.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nous sommes certainement arriv\u00e9s \u00e0 une p\u00e9riode de fin d’\u00e9mergence de l’esp\u00e8ce, car nous avons vu autant de sujets matures, que de sujets en cours de maturation ou immatures. Les deux sujets ci-dessus sont en train de prendre leurs couleurs d\u00e9finitives, mais on devine encore la couleur jaune clair des immatures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Il n’est assur\u00e9ment pas difficile sur son habitat ; nous en avons observ\u00e9 sur une assez large rivi\u00e8re, sur des foss\u00e9s, dans une zone mar\u00e9cageuse en limite de for\u00eat ou sur de petites mares (une grande flaque) ou le couple ci-dessous \u00e9tait en ponte.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Son aire de distribution est donc relativement plus limit\u00e9e que je ne l’imaginais, depuis l’est de l’Inde, le Myanmar, le Cambodge et la Tha\u00eflande jusqu’\u00e0 Born\u00e9o et les Philippines \u00e0 travers la P\u00e9ninsule Malaise. Il est absent du Cambodge, du Laos et du Vietnam o\u00f9 il est souvent confondu avec O. chrysis (et m\u00eame en Chine).

Je l’avais donc rencontr\u00e9 en Malaisie<\/a> o\u00f9 l’on trouvera d’autres photos, des photos de femelles, d’accouplement et de ponte.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ci-contre, cet agrandissement de l’aile d’un autre m\u00e2le immature montre deux dipt\u00e8res parasites, sans doute du genre Forcipomyia.
D’ailleurs, sur la premi\u00e8re photo de cette page, on distingue \u00e9galement un de ces parasites<\/a> \u00e0 la limite de la zone ambr\u00e9e de l’aile post\u00e9rieure droite.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00c9tymologie<\/strong>
Burmeister (1) a d\u00e9crit l’esp\u00e8ce \u00e0 partir d’un sujet de Java, partiellement en latin, comme c’\u00e9tait encore l’habitude, et en allemand gothique, sous le nom de genre Libellula qui \u00e9tait alors le refuge de tous les Libellulidae (et autres) et d\u00e9bordait d’esp\u00e8ces. Le genre \u00e9tant f\u00e9minin, il fait l’accord et l’esp\u00e8ce est appel\u00e9e testacea<\/em>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Orthetrum <\/strong>(3) vient de deux mots grecs, orthos<\/em> signifiant \u00ab\u00a0droit<\/em> \u00a0\u00bb et etron<\/em>  \u00ab\u00a0abdomen<\/em>\u00ab\u00a0, ceci pour signifier que les c\u00f4t\u00e9s de l\u2019abdomen sont parall\u00e8les. Ce nom de genre (neutre) cr\u00e9\u00e9 par Newman en 1833 a perdu sa pertinence avec la d\u00e9couverte de nouvelles esp\u00e8ces, mais le nom est rest\u00e9.
Testaceum<\/strong><\/em>, du latin testaceus<\/em>, qui signifie terre cuite<\/em> pour \u00e9voquer la couleur brique des individus. Il faut toujours avoir \u00e0 l’esprit que Burmeister n’a jamais vu de sujets vivants et ne travaillait que sur des sujets mis en collection dont les conditions de conservations \u00e9taient tr\u00e8s al\u00e9atoires.

Noter que Burmeister mesure l’esp\u00e8ce \u00e0 \u00a0\u00bb 1″ 10\u00a0\u00bb’ \u00a0\u00bb soit un pouce et 10 lignes<\/em> qui correspondent \u00e0 une mesure entomologique allemande \u00e9quivalente \u00e0 27.05 mm + 22.5 mm soit approximativement 49.5 mm.
Wilhelm von Winthem<\/em> (1799-1847) \u00e9tait un riche marchand de Hambourg, qui avait constitu\u00e9 une collection d’insectes mondialement c\u00e9l\u00e8bre.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
