Quand il est mature, Orthetrum luzonicum est tr\u00e8s clair, presque tout bleu, couvert de pruinosit\u00e9 blanch\u00e2tre ou bleu\u00e2tre, la face blanche et les yeux d’une bleu-vert magnifique. Les pt\u00e9rostigmas sont longs et jaune clair, la base des ailes est hyaline.
On ne peut le confondre qu’avec O. glaucum<\/a>, dont les derniers segments abdominaux sont variablement noircis, la face quasiment noire, les yeux plus sombres et la base des ailes post\u00e9rieures marqu\u00e9e d’une tache fonc\u00e9e.
J’ai fait un comparatif<\/a> sur les photos que j’ai faites en Malaisie.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Il est \u00e9l\u00e9gant avec son abdomen dilat\u00e9 pour les premiers segments, puis amincis et finalement l\u00e9g\u00e8rement \u00e9largis distalement, il semble d’ailleurs aplati dorso-ventralement. Les anglophiles l’appellent d’ailleurs Slender Blue Skimmer<\/em>.
Mais comme son aire de distribution est immense, il prend d’autres noms vernaculaires comme Marsh Skimmer<\/em> ou Tri-coloured Marsh Hawk<\/em>, cette derni\u00e8re appellation \u00e9voquant la coloration des m\u00e2les non compl\u00e8tement matures<\/a> (sur le plan de la coloration, ici en Malaisie P\u00e9ninsulaire), comme le m\u00e2le en accouplement \u00e0 la fin de la page.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Il mesure 40 \u00e0 42 mm de longueur totale (1).
On le trouve dans de tr\u00e8s nombreux habitats, ce qui explique sa facilit\u00e9 de dispersion et son aire de distribution immense : il appr\u00e9cie le plus souvent les milieux ouverts, les mares, \u00e9tangs, foss\u00e9s, drains, canaux, rizi\u00e8res et petites rivi\u00e8res.

Son aire de r\u00e9partition s’\u00e9tend de l’Afghanistan au Japon et aux Philippines, plus au sud jusqu’\u00e0 Singapour \u00e0 travers la P\u00e9ninsule Malaise<\/a> o\u00f9 je l’avais d\u00e9j\u00e0 rencontr\u00e9 et o\u00f9 ‘j’avais contact\u00e9 de magnifiques m\u00e2les tricolores.

Il n’est pas tr\u00e8s courant de rencontrer les Libellulidae en tandem pos\u00e9s, mais cette situation est bien commode pour identifier les femelles. Celles-ci sont proches des femelles O. glaucum et des femelles O. triangulare, mais ce sont les seules dont la face lat\u00e9rale du thorax ne montre pas de bande sombre m\u00e9diane.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On note que le m\u00e2le, sur ces tandems ou sur les accouplements ci-dessous, conserve une triple coloration thoracique, bleue, noire et finalement claire sur le centre de la face dorsale. Il est ainsi particuli\u00e8rement \u00e9l\u00e9gant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00c9tymologie<\/strong>
Orthetrum <\/strong>(2) vient de deux mots grecs, orthos<\/em> signifiant droit<\/em> et etron<\/em>  pour abdomen<\/em>, ceci pour signifier que les c\u00f4t\u00e9s de l\u2019abdomen sont parall\u00e8les. Ce nom de genre (neutre) cr\u00e9\u00e9 par Newman en 1833 a perdu sa pertinence avec la d\u00e9couverte de nouvelles esp\u00e8ces, mais le nom est rest\u00e9.
Luzonicum<\/strong>, se r\u00e9f\u00e8re directement \u00e0 Lu\u00e7on, la plus grande ile des Philippines, ou a \u00e9t\u00e9 collect\u00e9 l’holotype par le Dr. Karl Gottfried Semper, naturaliste Prussien, professeur, collectionneur et voyageur, en particulier aux Philippines, et auteur du monumental Reisen im Archipel der Philippinen<\/em> (Voyages dans l’archipel des Philippines).<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n
