Brachythemis contaminata est le Ditch Jewel<\/em> des anglophones ; et c’est vraiment un petit bijou m\u00eame s’il est commun.

Il accepte toutes sortes d’habitats, \u00e9ventuellement d\u00e9grad\u00e9s par les humains. Il est peu farouche et parfois pr\u00e9sent en grand nombre. Je l’ai rencontr\u00e9 sur des mares, des foss\u00e9s, des canaux d’irrigation, des flaques, diff\u00e9rentes rivi\u00e8res petites ou grandes comme les rives du M\u00e9kong, ou le gigantesque lac central du Cambodge, le Tonl\u00e9 Sap au Cambodge.

Il y a donc peu de chances de le rater en Asie du Sud-Est et c’\u00e9tait ma 7\u1d49 rencontre, la seconde au Vietnam, apr\u00e8s le Cambodge, le Laos, le Sri Lanka<\/a>, la Malaisie<\/a> et le Rajasthan<\/a>. Je le rencontrerai plus tard en Tha\u00eflande. Je ne l’ai \u00ab\u00a0rat\u00e9\u00a0\u00bb qu’au sud de la Chine (Yunnan et Guizhou) o\u00f9 elle est bien pr\u00e9sente, contrairement \u00e0 ce qu’\u00e9crit l’IUCN<\/a> (voir The Superfamily Calopterygoidea in South China : taxonomy and distribution<\/em>. <\/a>Progress Report for 2009 surveys, Zhang Haomiao).

Le Ditch Jewel, Brachythemis contaminata<\/em> mesure que 29 \u00e0 31 mm au total (Ngiam & Ng, 2022).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00c9tymologie<\/strong>
Brachythemis<\/strong> ; du grec brachy<\/em> pour court<\/em>, pour insister sur l\u2019abdomen court et trapu. Et, de Th\u00e9mis, d\u00e9esse grecque de l’Ordre et de la Justice. Ce choix respecte la mode<\/em> en cours \u00e0 cette \u00e9poque d’attribuer des noms relevant de l’histoire ou de la mythologie. De plus, le choix de cette d\u00e9esse est particuli\u00e8rement adapt\u00e9 au classement et au respect des r\u00e8gles qu’implique la taxonomie.
Contaminata<\/strong>, du latin contaminatus<\/em>, souill\u00e9, impur. Le Dr. Heinrich Fliedner (Fliedner, 2006) propose qu’on explique cette curieuse d\u00e9nomination par le fait que \u00ab\u00a0la coloration ocre dans la partie proximale des ailes est plus fonc\u00e9e pr\u00e8s du milieu de la c\u00f4te (ou bord costal)<\/em>.\u00a0\u00bb Je suis assez sceptique car je ne vois pas ce que cette suggestion explique, ni ce qui est souill\u00e9 ou impur, et on ne peut pas douter des qualit\u00e9s de latiniste scientifique de Fabricius.
Aussi, je pense plut\u00f4t que Fabricius, qui n’a pas l’habitude d’observer et de d\u00e9crire des odonates aux ailes color\u00e9es, a eu en main un sujet qui avait beaucoup et longtemps voyag\u00e9 (des mois, pour le moins) ; un sujet dess\u00e9ch\u00e9, terni et dont les ailes sont souill\u00e9s, pour lui, au sens propre.
Fabricius qui vit au Danemark, nous dit en effet que le sujet qu’il d\u00e9crit vient d’Inde, de la collection de T\u00f8nder Lund (1753\u20131832). Il pr\u00e9cise \u00ab\u00a0L. 6 maculatae<\/em>\u00a0\u00bb ; c’est la sixi\u00e8me Libellula<\/em> aux ailes macul\u00e9es qu’il d\u00e9crit dans son Entomologia Systematica<\/em>. Puis, plus loin : \u00ab\u00a0Toutes les ailes blanches, avec une grande ombre, jaune<\/em> \u00ab\u00a0.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
