Tetrathemis camerunensis fait partie des huit esp\u00e8ces africaines d’un genre qui en comprend 14 dans le monde ; il est \u00e9galement pr\u00e9sent en Asie et en Oc\u00e9anie. Les esp\u00e8ces africaines pourraient un jour rejoindre le genre Neophlebia, aujourd’hui disparu, mais que Selys avait cr\u00e9\u00e9 pour y placer Tetrathemis polleni. Sj\u00f6stedt a d’ailleurs d\u00e9crit cette esp\u00e8ce dans le genre qu’avait cr\u00e9\u00e9 Selys.
Il a \u00e9t\u00e9 plus tard mis en synonymie avec le genre Tetrathemis<\/em> (Brauer, 1868). Ce ne serait donc qu’un juste retour !<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tetrathemis camerunensis est tr\u00e8s proche de l’autre esp\u00e8ce que nous avons rencontr\u00e9e au Ghana, Tetrathemis godiardi<\/a>, et ne s’en distingue nettement que par les appendices anaux. Mais ceux-ci sont tr\u00e8s diff\u00e9rents : les appendices sup\u00e9rieurs, les cerques, de notre esp\u00e8ce sont longs et divergents, ceux de son cousin sont massifs et courts, un tout petit peu plus courts que l’\u00e9piprocte que l’on peut ainsi facilement observer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sj\u00f6stedt nous dit que le m\u00e2le mesure 31 mm et la femelle 28 mm.
Nous l’avons contact\u00e9 plusieurs fois et il nous a sembl\u00e9 bien plus commun que T. godiardi. Nous l’avons rencontr\u00e9 en for\u00eat<\/a>, sur de grandes flaques coupant les pistes de d\u00e9bardage, sur une assez grande mare en for\u00eat ou dans des milieux plus ouverts, comme sur ce ruisseau<\/a>, o\u00f9 Chris doit justement photographier le sujet ci-dessous \u00e0 droite.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sa distribution g\u00e9ographique suit la ceinture foresti\u00e8re tropicale et \u00e9quatoriale, depuis la Gambie et la Guin\u00e9e jusqu’au Nigeria en Afrique de l’Ouest, puis Cameroun, Gabon, Congo, et R\u00e9publique centrafricaine, puis Rwanda et Ouganda.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sur la mare foresti\u00e8re en question, nous avons observ\u00e9 un accouplement, malheureusement inapprochable et un peu trop en hauteur. C’est l’occasion de constater le faible dimorphisme sexuel. On remarque cependant que l’abdomen de la femelle semble bien plus large que celui du m\u00e2le.

Les pluies inhabituelles de ce mois de janvier ont form\u00e9 par endroits de larges flaques d’eau sur les chemins forestiers. Sur une branchette qui en \u00e9mergeait, une femelle \u00e9tait en ponte sous la surveillance d’un m\u00e2le. Celui-ci volait autour et se posait de temps en temps, juste \u00e0 c\u00f4t\u00e9 d’elle. La femelle ins\u00e9rait ses yeux dans ce morceau de bois pourri, environ 30 cm au-dessus de l’eau. Les larves ou prolarves devront certainement plonger pour trouver un \u00e9l\u00e9ment dans lequel se d\u00e9velopper.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00c9tymologie <\/strong>Tetrathemis camerunensis
Tetrathemis<\/strong> (Brauer, 1868), de \u2013tetra<\/em> pour \u2013quatre<\/em> et de Themis<\/em> \u2013 d\u00e9esse grecque de l\u2019ordre, de la justice. Le nom de la d\u00e9esse de l\u2019ordre est particuli\u00e8rement bien adapt\u00e9 \u00e0 la taxonomie, science qui vise \u00e0 d\u00e9crire et ordonner les familles, genres et esp\u00e8ces.
Le chiffre 4 se r\u00e9f\u00e8re, comme le d\u00e9crit Brauer, \u00e0 la forme de la cellule cardinale<\/em>, que nous appelons abusivement triangle<\/em>, qui est quadrangulaire pour ce genre. Cette \u00e9tymologie est fournie par Endersby & Fliedner, 2015.
Camerunensis<\/strong> vient \u00e9videmment du Cameroun<\/em> auquel est ajout\u00e9 le suffixe –ensis<\/em>, qui indique la provenance. Sj\u00f6stedt pr\u00e9cise que le sujet provient de Kitta, sans doute r\u00e9pertori\u00e9 actuellement comme Kotto Balue, \u00e0 l’ouest du Cameroun, qui \u00e9tait l’un de ses camps de base lors de son exp\u00e9dition de 1891.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pr\u00e8s de 3 mois apr\u00e8s avoir publi\u00e9 cet article, j’ai d\u00e9couvert ce m\u00e2le immature, qui m’a fait r\u00e9aliser combien l’esp\u00e8ce est aussi proche de Nothiothemis robertsi<\/a><\/em> (photo Phil Benstead<\/em> en Ouganda sur iNaturalist<\/a>) sur une vue dorsale de l’abdomen ; mais le thorax est tr\u00e8s diff\u00e9rent pour ce dernier, plus proche, par exemple, de Neodythemis klingi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
