Hadrothemis defecta, Libellulidae, est nomm\u00e9 Red Jungle-skimmer en anglais et sa r\u00e9partition est centr\u00e9e sur la zone \u00e9quatoriale.
Sa face m\u00e9tallique, son thorax noir ou sombre, son abdomen rouge marqu\u00e9 d’un anneau sombre entre chaque segment le rendent impossible \u00e0 confondre avec un de ses cousins ou m\u00eame un autre Hadrothemis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Il y a sept esp\u00e8ces dans le genre Hadrothemis, toutes africaines et tropicales, toutes pr\u00e9sentant un thorax robuste. Cet aspect est certainement accentu\u00e9 pour Hadrothemis defecta par le contraste entre l’abdomen et la base largement sombre de ses ailes.
Nous avons rencontr\u00e9 4 des 5 esp\u00e8ces connues au Ghana, il nous manquera H. versuta.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Karsch nous dit que la longueur totale de cet odonate atteint 40 mm. 39,5 mm pour la femelle que nous n’avons pas eu la chance de rencontrer.
Il faut de temps en temps rappeler que, malgr\u00e9 ce que nous voyons sur nos \u00e9crans, les libellules ne sont pas souvent \u00ab\u00a0grandes comme \u00e7a !\u00a0\u00bb, comme le rapportent les t\u00e9moins n\u00e9ophytes, m\u00eame si elles sont les plus grands repr\u00e9sentants de l’ordre des insectes.
Pour comparaison, une allumette d’une petite bo\u00eete mesure environ 43 mm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ce sont des odonates de la for\u00eat, mais comme tous les Libellulidae, on peut les trouver \u00e0 distance de l’eau dans des aires plus ouvertes et ensoleill\u00e9es, le long des chemins forestiers. Ils se reproduisent pourtant dans des mares foresti\u00e8res abrit\u00e9es pour quatre esp\u00e8ces, tandis que trois autres pondent dans les phytotelmes (trous d’arbres), ce qui montre une surprenante diversit\u00e9 pour un m\u00eame genre.

\u00c9tymologie<\/strong> Hadrothemis defecta
Karsch d\u00e9crit l’esp\u00e8ce sous le nom de genre Thermorthemis<\/em> en 1891 (a), Martin en 1906 le placera dans les Bolivarides<\/em>, et c’est Ris, en 1909, qui lui fera int\u00e9grer les Hadrothemis pourtant cr\u00e9\u00e9s par Karsch, en 1891 (b) \u00e9galement.
Hadrothemis<\/strong>, du grec hadros<\/em> qui signifie fort, robuste, bien d\u00e9velopp\u00e9<\/em> et de Themis, d\u00e9esse grecque de l\u2019ordre et de la justice, qui a \u00e9t\u00e9 utilis\u00e9 de nombreuses fois depuis Hagen (1861). Le nom de la d\u00e9esse de l\u2019ordre est particuli\u00e8rement bien adapt\u00e9 \u00e0 la taxonomie, science qui vise \u00e0 d\u00e9crire et ordonner les familles, genres et esp\u00e8ces. Ce –themis<\/em> est en fait devenu un signal d’appartenance aux Libellulidae. Karsch \u00e9crit : \u00ab\u00a0Kurz, plump und dick – Court, lourd et \u00e9pais\u00a0\u00bb, qui se rapporte \u00e0 son thorax massif.
Defecta<\/strong>, du latin deficere<\/em>, signifie manquant, incomplet<\/em>. Lorsqu’il d\u00e9crit cette esp\u00e8ce dans le genre Thermothemis, <\/em>Karsch remarque que c’est la seule qu’il connaisse \u00e0 laquelle il manque une veine dans le triangle de l’aile post\u00e9rieure (le triangle est libre) : \u00ab\u00a0im Hinterfl\u00fcgel die cellula cardinalis leer<\/em>\u2026\u00a0\u00bb.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
