Chlorocypha dispar, Chlorocyphidae, fait partie d’un genre qui compte 31 esp\u00e8ces, toutes end\u00e9miques de l’Afrique tropicale. Les esp\u00e8ces sont parfois tr\u00e8s difficiles \u00e0 identifier en raison des variations tr\u00e8s importantes qu’elles pr\u00e9sentent au cours de leur d\u00e9veloppement, de leur environnement et m\u00eame de la temp\u00e9rature, car elles sont ternies ou assombries par le \u00ab\u00a0froid\u00a0\u00bb (Dijkstra, 2003).
Ainsi, les jeunes Chlorocypha dispar et Chlorocypha luminosa ont des motifs thoraciques noirs sur fond jaune quasi indiff\u00e9rentiables ; mais si C. luminosa<\/a> reste jaune pour le thorax, C. dispar devient compl\u00e8tement noir : c’est d’ailleurs le plus sombre de tous (le plus m\u00e9lanique).
Ainsi, la face et la t\u00eate du Little Red Jewel<\/em> (son nom vernaculaire anglais) sont noires, comme son thorax. Les tibias sont blancs sur leur face ant\u00e9ro-interne, l’abdomen est rouge vif avec des marques noires variables sur les segments 2 et 3. Le segment 2 est souvent noir avec une tache dorsale ovale rouge (Pinhey, 1967).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Au Ghana, il y a sept Chlorocypha et nous avons eu la chance de les rencontrer tous. Par son thorax compl\u00e8tement noir, C. dispar m\u00e2le tient une place \u00e0 part et il ne pourrait \u00eatre confondu (ce qui a d’abord \u00e9t\u00e9 notre cas) qu’avec Chlorocypha pyriformosa<\/a>, mais la t\u00eate et le thorax de cette esp\u00e8ce conservent des marques jaunes \u00e0 maturit\u00e9.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

C’est une toute petite esp\u00e8ce ; Fraser (1949) mesure son abdomen \u00e0 19 mm, relevant une erreur de Selys dans son Synopsis des Calopt\u00e9rygines<\/em> (1853) qui le donnait pour 29 mm (Selys avait class\u00e9 cet Agrion dispar<\/em> de Palisot de Beauvois dans les Libellago<\/em>).
Il mesure donc au total environ 28 \u00e0 29 mm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nous l’avons rencontr\u00e9 sur une petite rivi\u00e8re peu profonde en for\u00eat, dans un endroit sombre, en compagnie d’une femelle Chlorocypha que je pense \u00eatre de la m\u00eame esp\u00e8ce, car elle \u00e9tait juste \u00e0 c\u00f4t\u00e9 et nous n’avons pas vu d’autre Chlorocypha cet apr\u00e8s-midi (C. luminosa le matin).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sa distribution s’\u00e9tend du S\u00e9n\u00e9gal et du sud du Mali au Cameroun et peut-\u00eatre au Gabon.

Ma s\u00e9rie de photos du m\u00e2le est interrompue par celles de cette femelle, tr\u00e8s certainement de la m\u00eame esp\u00e8ce et qui semble bien correspondre au dessin de Fraser montr\u00e9 plus haut. Le dimorphisme sexuel est tr\u00e8s important, mais on retrouve la petite marque ronde sur la face dorsale du S2.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On peut appr\u00e9cier comme les descriptions ont progress\u00e9 depuis celle de Palisot de Beauvois, qui est pour le moins succincte, et bravo \u00e0 celui qui pourrait identifier un sp\u00e9cimen en s’y r\u00e9f\u00e9rant ; heureusement, les holotypes<\/a> sont la plupart du temps bien conserv\u00e9s et consultables. En l’occurrence l’holotype a \u00e9t\u00e9 tr\u00e8s t\u00f4t perdu… <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Description de Agrion dispar par Palisot de Beauvois<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

L’illustration ci-dessous, issue de l’ouvrage de Palisot de Beauvois et r\u00e9alis\u00e9e par Jean-Gabriel Pr\u00eatre, est pour le moins \u00e9tonnante ; les ailes semblent s’ins\u00e9rer non pas sur le thorax mais sur de bizarres segments abdominaux. Et cela est d’autant plus curieux que Pr\u00eatre \u00e9tait un peintre naturaliste de renom, attach\u00e9 au Mus\u00e9um national d’histoire naturelle de Paris, et l’un des illustrateurs les plus prolifiques de son \u00e9poque. Je ne sais pas si Jean-Gabriel Pr\u00eatre a fait ce dessin \u00e0 partir d’un sp\u00e9cimen ou d’un dessin de Palisot de Beauvois.
Je m’\u00e9tonne toujours de la fa\u00e7on dont les odonatologues \u00ab\u00a0historiques\u00a0\u00bb ont pu progresser avec de telles reproductions !<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00c9tymologie<\/strong> : Chlorocypha dispar
Fraser<\/em> (1928) a cr\u00e9\u00e9 le genre Chlorocypha pour cet Agrion dispar de Palisot de Beauvois<\/em>.
Chlorocypha<\/strong>, du grec chloro<\/em>, pour jaune ou vert<\/em>, et de cyphos<\/em> qui signifie bossu<\/em>, bosse<\/em>, pour la couleur du curieux clypeus<\/em> de l’esp\u00e8ce, certainement chez un sujet immature. Fraser<\/em> \u00e9crit : \u00ab\u00a0I have chosen the name Chlorocypha for this genus, based on the specific character mentioned by Palisot de Beauvois for the type species dispar : \u00ab\u00a0le chaperon [Clypeus] est d’un jaune-verd\u00e2tre<\/em>\u00ab\u00a0. Il est pour moi certain que Palisot de Beauvois n’a jamais \u00e9crit ces mots dans sa description, ni Selys dans son Synopsis des Calopt\u00e9rygines, ni dans sa Monographie des Calopt\u00e9rygines. L’origine de la citation de Fraser reste pour moi un myst\u00e8re.
Dispar<\/strong> ; signifie dissemblable, diff\u00e9rent<\/em> en latin, et Palisot de Beauvois qui rel\u00e8ve de nombreuses diff\u00e9rences \u00e9crit : \u00ab\u00a0Cette esp\u00e8ce est plus courte et plus grosse que toutes celles du genre ; elle semble faire un passage des \u00c6shnes aux Agrions. Les premiers anneaux de l’abdomen sont plus gros et renfl\u00e9s ; la t\u00eate en diff\u00e8re \u00e9galement ; le casque est plus relev\u00e9 et plus prolong\u00e9 ; les yeux sont plus pr\u00e8s l’un de l’autre, plus grands ; mais les ailes sont droites et relev\u00e9es<\/em>.\u00a0\u00bb<\/p>\n\n\n\n
