Chlorocypha radix est un des plus beaux de ce genre spectaculaire qui compte une trentaine d’esp\u00e8ces, toutes end\u00e9miques d’Afrique tropicale, dont sept au Ghana. Tous les membres de la famille des Chlorocyphidae portent un clypeus<\/a> pro\u00e9minent qui permet de les identifier sans h\u00e9sitation ; ils ont \u00e9galement en commun d’avoir les ailes aussi longues ou plus longues que l’abdomen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On note que les marques claires du thorax ou des quatre premiers segments sont bleues, ou blanches en fonction de la maturit\u00e9 et de l’\u00e9clairage, les 6 derniers segments sont rouge vif ; il prend en anglais le nom de Western Red-tipped Jewel.
Il est tr\u00e8s proche de C. glauca et a d’abord \u00e9t\u00e9 pr\u00e9sent\u00e9 par Longfield (1959) comme une sous-esp\u00e8ce de ce dernier ; elle distinguait alors C. glauca glauca, une esp\u00e8ce d’altitude, et C. glauca radix, une esp\u00e8ce costale ou de plaine.
Mais alors que Chlorocypha radix montre une coloration rouge sur les segments 5 \u00e0 10, celle de C. glauca est moins \u00e9tendue, couvrant les segments 6 (rarement 5) \u00e0 10. Les motifs thoraciques sont \u00e9galement tr\u00e8s voisins, ceux de C. radix sont plus \u00e9tendus, plus larges (mais ne correspondent pas aux dessins qu’en donne Longfield, voir plus bas) et il appara\u00eet plus clair.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

C’est K-D Dijkstra (2003) qui a valid\u00e9 l’esp\u00e8ce sur la base des diff\u00e9rences de coloration de l’abdomen, du thorax, en pr\u00e9cisant que les diff\u00e9rences avec les autres esp\u00e8ces (C. glauca, aphrodite, seydeli) sont minces mais fiables. Malheureusement, ni Longfield, ni K-D Dijkstra ne donne la taille de son abdomen ; il est vrai que ce n’est pas essentiel, dans la mesure o\u00f9 dans ces documents on le compare avec d’autres esp\u00e8ces.
Mais Lieftinck (1973) a d\u00e9crit un Chlorocypha pavonis<\/em> qui s’est av\u00e9r\u00e9 \u00eatre \u00e9galement un synonyme junior de C. radix, et il nous donne la taille de son abdomen : 22,5 mm, appendices anaux inclus. Il mesure donc environ 34,5 mm au total.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nous l’avons rencontr\u00e9 \u00e0 deux reprises ; la premi\u00e8re fois dans la partie un peu plus ouverte d’un ruisseau en for\u00eat<\/a>, en compagnie de Chlorocypha luminosa, Pseudagrion melanicterum et Elattoneura villiersi. La seconde, pr\u00e8s d’une mare, tr\u00e8s pr\u00e8s de Copera guttifera, Ceriagrion glabrum et Trithemis grouti.

Sa distribution s’\u00e9tend au Lib\u00e9ria, en Guin\u00e9e et en Sierra Leone jusqu’au Nigeria. Il n’est cependant pas confirm\u00e9 au B\u00e9nin.

Ci-dessous, une femelle rencontr\u00e9e avec le m\u00e2le plus bas : on retrouve sur celle-ci les 2 bandes thoraciques sup\u00e9rieures soud\u00e9es en avant comme le fait voir Longfield sur son dessin. Il s’agit sans doute d’une variation car aucun des m\u00e2les que nous avons rencontr\u00e9s, ni aucune des photos que j’ai pu trouver sur le web ne satisfait \u00e0 ce d\u00e9tail.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00c9tymologie<\/strong> Chlorocypha radix
Chlorocypha<\/strong>, du grec chloro<\/em>, pour jaune ou vert<\/em>, et de cyphos<\/em> qui signifie bossu<\/em>, bosse<\/em>, pour la couleur du curieux clypeus<\/em> de l\u2019esp\u00e8ce, certainement chez un sujet immature.  Fraser<\/em> \u00e9crit : \u00ab\u00a0I have chosen the name Chlorocypha for this genus, based on the specific character mentioned by Palisot de Beauvois for the type species dispar : <\/em>\u00ab le chaperon [Clypeus] est d\u2019un jaune-verd\u00e2tre<\/em>\u00ab\u00a0. Il est pour moi certain que Palisot de Beauvois n\u2019a jamais \u00e9crit ces mots dans sa description, ni Selys dans son Synopsis des Calopt\u00e9rygines, ni dans sa Monographie des Calopt\u00e9rygines. L\u2019origine de la citation de Fraser reste pour moi un myst\u00e8re.
Radix<\/strong> ; Cynthia Longfield, dans une note en bas de page, explique que ce mot signifie racine<\/em>, ou bas d’une montagne<\/em>, insistant sur son habitat de plaine, comme \u00e9voqu\u00e9 plus haut.
