Bradinopyga strachani, Libellulidae, m’a toujours \u00e9tonn\u00e9 par ses noms d’esp\u00e8ce et de genre (je l’avais d\u00e9j\u00e0 rencontr\u00e9 au B\u00e9nin<\/a>) ; cela s’est accru quand j’ai appris que Kirby (1900) l’avait plac\u00e9 dans le genre Apeleutherus<\/em> ! Un genre aujourd’hui disparu.
Kirby avait pourtant cr\u00e9\u00e9 le genre Bradinopyga en 1894 pour la seule esp\u00e8ce asiatique alors connue, B. geminata<\/a>. C’est Ris, en 1911, qui a corrig\u00e9 cette impr\u00e9cision et a int\u00e9gr\u00e9 cette esp\u00e8ce dans le genre Bradinopyga.
Jusqu’en 2020, on ne comptait que trois esp\u00e8ces dans le genre Bradinopyga : les deux esp\u00e8ces cit\u00e9es pr\u00e9c\u00e9demment et B. cornuta, qui se trouve au sud de l’Afrique. Mais, en 2020, Joshi & Savant ont ajout\u00e9 en Inde un B. konkanensis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tous les Bradinopyga sont particuli\u00e8rement thermophiles et on les voit rarement pos\u00e9s ailleurs que sur les murs des habitations ou les rochers ; c’est un triste choix qui rend les m\u00e2les immatures et les femelles particuli\u00e8rement difficiles \u00e0 rep\u00e9rer, en raison de leur coloration \u00ab\u00a0camouflage\u00a0\u00bb. Il re\u00e7oit d’ailleurs le nom anglais de Red Rockdweller, soulignant sa couleur et son app\u00e9tence pour les rochers.
Ils sont d’ailleurs tellement particuliers avec cette tenue de camouflage qu’il est impossible de les confondre avec une autre esp\u00e8ce.

Kirby nous dit que la longueur du corps atteint 38 \u00e0 40 mm.

On le trouve essentiellement sur les eaux stagnantes temporaires, telles que les flaques d’eau de pluie ou les d\u00e9bordements de rivi\u00e8res dans des paysages d\u00e9gag\u00e9s, mais parfois dans des zones ouvertes en for\u00eat. Ici, c’est sur le mur d’une habitation, juste \u00e0 la limite de la for\u00eat, que nous avons observ\u00e9 ce couple.

La femelle rappelle, par ses couleurs uniquement, notre Boyeria irene<\/a>…<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sa distribution s’\u00e9tend largement de la Guin\u00e9e-Bissau \u00e0 l’\u00c9thiopie. Au sud, il atteint le Congo, la R\u00e9publique D\u00e9mocratique du Congo et l’Ouganda.

\u00c9tymologie<\/strong> Bradinopyga strachani
Un mot sur Apeleutherus<\/em>, le nom de genre que lui a d’abord donn\u00e9 Kirby. Ce mot latin qualifie un esclave affranchi ou plut\u00f4t un \u00ab\u00a0homme qui n’est pas n\u00e9 libre mais l’est devenu\u00a0\u00bb. C’est \u00e9tonnant et rien dans la description de Kirby ne permet d’apporter une hypoth\u00e8se sur ce choix qui exprime sans doute le fait que ce genre \u00e9chappe \u00e0 une norme\u2026
Bradinopyga<\/strong>, du grec bradinos<\/em> qui signifie mince, svelte<\/em> et de pyge, fesse, croupe<\/em> et par extension abdomen, pour les insectes. Sans doute pour faire remarquer le contraste entre le thorax massif et l’abdomen fin, surtout dans les derniers segments.
Strachani<\/strong> est un hommage au docteur Henry Strachan, m\u00e9decin colonial et naturaliste britannique de premier plan, dont la carri\u00e8re a permis d’enrichir consid\u00e9rablement les collections du British Museum \u00e0 la fin du XIX\u1d49 si\u00e8cle. Il a captur\u00e9 les sp\u00e9cimens d\u00e9crits par Kirby, \u00e0 Lagos, au Nig\u00e9ria.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
