Nous avons rencontr\u00e9 Sapho bicolor \u00e0 plusieurs reprises, mais il s’est av\u00e9r\u00e9 impossible \u00e0 approcher malgr\u00e9 toutes mes tentatives ; je pense qu’il d\u00e9collait d\u00e8s que j’arrivais \u00e0 5 m\u00e8tres de lui. Et pas de chance, j’utilisais encore ce jour un Full Frame, qui fait para\u00eetre le sujet encore plus \u00e9loign\u00e9. J’en suis tr\u00e8s f\u00e2ch\u00e9 car c’est un odonate magnifique et mes photos ne lui rendent pas hommage.

Le genre, end\u00e9mique d’Afrique tropicale, compte sept esp\u00e8ces (World Odonata List<\/a>) et il diff\u00e8re du genre Umma, principalement par le fait que ses sujets sont plus robustes, avec des pt\u00e9rostigmas plus grands, et arborent souvent des ailes color\u00e9es (ADDO (2023)). Mais il n’est pas impossible qu’un jour les genres soient fusionn\u00e9s dans le genre Sapho qui aurait la pr\u00e9s\u00e9ance…

Il n’y a que deux repr\u00e9sentants du genre au Ghana et ils sont faciles \u00e0 s\u00e9parer puisque S. ciliata montre des ailes enti\u00e8rement color\u00e9es. Sapho bicolor est de plus le seul Calopterygidae en Afrique \u00e0 montrer de telles ailes larges avec une d\u00e9marcation de couleur si marqu\u00e9e. Il est \u00e0 noter que dans le centre de l’Afrique on d\u00e9crit une forme superba<\/em>, pour laquelle la zone sombre est bord\u00e9e d’une zone diffuse blanch\u00e2tre ou blanche magnifique.
Il a \u00e9t\u00e9 d\u00e9crit par Selys qui donne son abdomen pour 44-45 mm, soit une longueur totale d’environ 59 mm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

C’est un habitant de ruisseaux de for\u00eats, tr\u00e8s \u00e0 l’ombre, mais c’est dans un environnement perturb\u00e9 de broussailles et d’arbres tomb\u00e9s, dans une zone mar\u00e9cageuse, que ces photos ont \u00e9t\u00e9 r\u00e9alis\u00e9es. Il est parfois difficile, dans la jungle, de savoir si un ruisseau n’est pas cach\u00e9 \u00e0 quelques m\u00e8tres dans la v\u00e9g\u00e9tation.

Sa distribution s’\u00e9tend de la Guin\u00e9e, de la Sierra Leone et du Lib\u00e9ria au Gabon, au Cameroun, aux deux Congo et \u00e0 la R\u00e9publique centrafricaine. Il n’est cependant pas connu actuellement au B\u00e9nin.

\u00c9tymologie<\/strong>
Sapho<\/strong> fait r\u00e9f\u00e9rence \u00e0 Sappho ou Sapho, po\u00e9tesse grecque de l’Antiquit\u00e9 (VII\u1d49 si\u00e8cle av. J.-C.) originaire de l’\u00eele de Lesbos. Selys, dans son Synopsis des Calopt\u00e9rygines, cr\u00e9e de nombreux genres et multiplie les r\u00e9f\u00e9rences \u00e0 la mythologie ou \u00e0 l’histoire ; des genres se voient ainsi nomm\u00e9s Phaon (passeur sur l’\u00eele de Lesbos dont Sappho tombera amoureuse) et Cleis (pr\u00e9nom de la m\u00e8re et de la fille de Sappho). Bicolor<\/strong> est tout simplement l’adjectif latin bicolore<\/em> qui se rapporte bien s\u00fbr aux ailes de cet odonate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
