Un tour odonatologique au Vietnam est difficile \u00e0 envisager sans Orthetrum sabina (Libellulidae), le \u00ab\u00a0Faucon vert des marais\u00a0\u00bb (Green marsh hawk<\/em>) selon les anglosaxons, qui l’appellent aussi \u00e0 juste titre Slender skimmer<\/em> voire m\u00eame Tiger skimmer<\/em> etc… C’est vrai que c’est un redoutable pr\u00e9dateur qui consomme volontiers d’autres libellules, adopte m\u00eame parfois un comportement cannibale<\/a>, et que son abdomen est tr\u00e8s fin.
C’est ce qui lui a valu un nom vernaculaire en fran\u00e7ais, ce qui est plut\u00f4t rare pour un odonate asiatique (je me demande qui a pu le baptiser et surtout qui a pu utiliser ce nom !), l’Orth\u00e9trum en al\u00eane.
Il mesure dans les 50 mm, montre un habitus qui semble singulier, mais il est occasionnellement confondu (sur photo en tout cas) avec Diplacodes trivialis femelle<\/a> ou m\u00e2le immature, pourtant beaucoup plus petits, mais dont l’abdomen montre un peu cette alternance de zones claires et sombres.
En tout cas, il sait saisir l’occasion d’allier le plaisir gustatif et le plaisir visuel du plat bien pr\u00e9sent\u00e9 en ayant choisi ci-dessous un magnifique petit dipt\u00e8re pour son d\u00e9jeuner (il est 13 heures 39).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Le dimorphisme sexuel est assez r\u00e9duit, mais \u00e9vident sur cette vue sup\u00e9rieure o\u00f9 les appendices anaux sont bien visibles (ci-dessous).
Comme on l’a vu \u00e0 la page pr\u00e9c\u00e9dente, j’ai rencontr\u00e9 O. sabina dans quelques pays, j’avais d\u00e9j\u00e0 vu des accouplements, mais comme bien souvent pour les Libellulidae, et bien d’autres Anisopt\u00e8res, je n’avais jamais vu de femelle isol\u00e9e. Ici, c’est \u00e0 la tomb\u00e9e du jour, 18 heures, dans le parc de Cuc Phuong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Orthetrum sabina (Libellulidae) est un odonate des mares, mais parmi les toutes premi\u00e8res photos de ce s\u00e9jour, j’ai pu saisir ce couple \u0153uvrant pour l’avenir, dans la partie calme qui succ\u00e9dait \u00e0 la chute d’eau d’un barrage sur une petite rivi\u00e8re.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

L’esp\u00e8ce a \u00e9t\u00e9 d\u00e9crite, assez sommairement, sous le nom de Libellula sabina<\/em>, par Dru Drury, orf\u00e8vre et entomologiste anglais (1725-1804) dans une \u00e9tonnante s\u00e9rie d’ouvrages dans laquelle les insectes sont illustr\u00e9s en couleur, accompagn\u00e9s d’un texte en anglais et en fran\u00e7ais. Et c’est Kirby (1890), dans son \u00e9norme travail de synonymisation qui lui a fait int\u00e9grer le genre Orthetrum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00c9tymologie<\/strong>
Orthetrum<\/strong> vient de deux mots grecs, ortho signifiant droit<\/em> et etron<\/em>, pour abdomen<\/em>, ceci pour signifier que les c\u00f4t\u00e9s de l\u2019abdomen sont parall\u00e8les. Ce nom de genre (neutre) cr\u00e9\u00e9 par Newman en 1833 a perdu sa pertinence avec la d\u00e9couverte de nouvelles esp\u00e8ces, mais le nom est rest\u00e9.
Sabina<\/strong> ; je croyais pr\u00e9c\u00e9demment que Sabina faisait r\u00e9f\u00e9rence aux c\u00e9l\u00e8bres Sabines, enlev\u00e9es par Romulus aux origines de Rome. Cette r\u00e9f\u00e9rence \u00e9tymologique n’explique pas le choix de ce nom d’esp\u00e8ce, mais la coutume \u00e0 cette \u00e9poque \u00e9tait de donner des noms en rapport avec l’histoire ou la mythologie grecque ou romaine.
Mais, lorsque Watson (1984) d\u00e9crit une esp\u00e8ce tr\u00e8s voisine pr\u00e9sente en Oc\u00e9anie jusqu’aux Philippines, Orthetrum serapia<\/a>, il explique qu’il suppose que Drury a \u00e9t\u00e9 inspir\u00e9 par Sainte Sabine lorsqu\u2019il a d\u00e9crit son esp\u00e8ce et a utilis\u00e9 serapia<\/em> car Sainte Serapie \u00e9tait l\u2019esclave de Sainte Sabine. Elle a converti celle-ci au catholicisme et elles furent toutes deux d\u00e9capit\u00e9es pendant le r\u00e8gne de l\u2019empereur Hadrien.
On ne saura sans doute jamais quelle est la bonne<\/em> Sabine pour Drury.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
