Je n’avais jamais rencontr\u00e9 une Crocothemis erythraea femelle avec un tel habitus<\/a> ; pourtant Crocothemis erythraea est tr\u00e8s commun dans mon aire de r\u00e9sidence en France, tr\u00e8s peu pr\u00e9sent dans les zones que nous avons prospect\u00e9es au Ghana puisque nous sommes essentiellement rest\u00e9s en for\u00eat.
Classiquement, les femelles<\/a> sont jaunes (ou dor\u00e9es), la base des ailes ambr\u00e9es comme la veination sous-costale, une bande ant\u00e9hum\u00e9rale brun fonc\u00e9 et une ligne noire plus ou moins marqu\u00e9e parcourant la car\u00e8ne dorsale abdominale. Un peu comme celle ci-dessous, bien que la ligne noire sur la car\u00e8ne dorsale soit ici assez marqu\u00e9e.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On rencontre \u00e9galement des femelles dites andromorphes ou androchromes<\/a>, de la m\u00eame couleur ou presque que les m\u00e2les, donc bien s\u00fbr rouges.
Mais jamais je n’avais vu une femelle \u00e0 moiti\u00e9<\/em> androchrome. On pourrait penser que sa maturation n’est pas finie et que son thorax va \u00e9galement devenir rouge ; je ne le pense pas, car m\u00eame si ce n’est pas une vieille femelle, elle n’est pas tr\u00e8s jeune, son abdomen est tr\u00e8s color\u00e9 avec une tr\u00e8s forte ligne noire sur la face dorsale de l’abdomen et sa face est tr\u00e8s claire et blanch\u00e2tre.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nous avons d’ailleurs \u00e9t\u00e9 quelques instants perturb\u00e9s pour l’identifier, puisque Crocothemis sanguinolenta et divisa sont pr\u00e9sents au Ghana ; mais C. divisa est une petite esp\u00e8ce dont les femelles ne montrent pas de coloration alaire ni de patch alaire basal, tandis que la car\u00e8ne abdominale lat\u00e9rale de C. sanguinolenta est ponctu\u00e9e de traits noirs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nous avons observ\u00e9 cette Crocothemis erythraea femelle au bord d’une large zone humide<\/a> cr\u00e9\u00e9e par le delta de deux rivi\u00e8res formant un \u00ab\u00a0lagon\u00a0\u00bb. Leur habitat favorise comme en France les milieux lentiques, mais il arrive qu’on les trouve au bord des rivi\u00e8res lentes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

C’est le Crocothemis le plus r\u00e9pandu, le plus commun en Afrique, mais nous ne l’avons rencontr\u00e9 qu’\u00e0 trois reprises.
Son aire de distribution est gigantesque, d’autant qu’il progresse constamment vers le nord de l’Europe ; il n’a franchi le d\u00e9troit de Gibraltar qu’en 1975 et est maintenant bien implant\u00e9 en Allemagne et en Hollande et signal\u00e9 occasionnellement en Angleterre.
Il occupe toute l’Afrique jusqu’\u00e0 Madagascar et atteint l’est de l’Inde et le Kirghizistan.

\u00c9tymologie<\/strong> Crocothemis eythraea
Brull\u00e9 a d\u00e9crit l’esp\u00e8ce dans le genre Libellula et c’est Brauer qui en a fait l’esp\u00e8ce type de son genre Crocothemis en 1868.
Crocothemis<\/strong>, du grec krokos<\/em> pour safran\u00e9<\/em> en r\u00e9f\u00e9rence \u00e0 la couleur de la base de l’aile et de Themis, d\u00e9esse grecque de l’ordre, de la justice.
Hagen en 1861 a cr\u00e9\u00e9 plusieurs noms de genres termin\u00e9s par le suffixe Themis, sans doute parce que d’autres noms de libellules comportaient des noms de dieux comme Echo ou Nehalennia. Le nom de la d\u00e9esse de l’ordre est particuli\u00e8rement bien adapt\u00e9 \u00e0 la taxonomie, science qui vise \u00e0 d\u00e9crire et ordonner les familles, genres et esp\u00e8ces. Brauer a repris le terme \u00ab\u00a0themis\u00a0\u00bb qui est devenu en quelque sorte une indication de l’appartenance au Libellulidae.
Erythraea<\/strong>, du latin erithraeus<\/em>, rouge<\/em>, pour la couleur \u00e9carlate du m\u00e2le mature et non pas pour une origine \u00e9rythr\u00e9enne (ancienne province d’\u00c9thiopie), car le nom de cet \u00c9tat vient aussi de la couleur rouge<\/em> de la mer qu’il borde. L’esp\u00e8ce a \u00e9t\u00e9 d\u00e9crite \u00e0 partir d’un sujet pris dans le sud-ouest du P\u00e9loponn\u00e8se (Gr\u00e8ce actuelle).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
