J’avais d\u00e9j\u00e0 rencontr\u00e9 Rhyothemis variegata (Libellulidae) au Laos<\/a>, au Cambodge<\/a> et au Sri Lanka<\/a> et comme je l’avais fait remarquer dans une des pages d\u00e9j\u00e0 consacr\u00e9es \u00e0 cette esp\u00e8ce, je n’avais jamais rencontr\u00e9 que des femelles qu’on identifie entre autres par leurs ailes aux extr\u00e9mit\u00e9s hyalines.
Voil\u00e0 enfin des m\u00e2les spectaculaires avec leurs ailes enti\u00e8rement color\u00e9es, et surtout pos\u00e9s, car c’est une esp\u00e8ce que l’on voit souvent papillonner en nombre \u00e0 plusieurs m\u00e8tres au-dessus du sol, parfois en compagnie de Pantala flavescens; il faut dire que les deux esp\u00e8ces sont particuli\u00e8rement communes.
Il prend d’ailleurs le nom anglais de Common Picture Wing ou de Variegated flutterer, ce deuxi\u00e8me nom refl\u00e9tant sa fa\u00e7on de voler \u00e0 la mani\u00e8re d’un papillon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Au Vietnam et en Chine, on rencontre la sous-esp\u00e8ce R. variegata arria avec des ailes tr\u00e8s color\u00e9es et de fortes marques sombres. On d\u00e9crit 2 autres formes\u00a0: R. v. variegata de l’Inde au Laos et R. v. imperatrix au Japon.
Sa distribution s’\u00e9tend de l’Inde au sud de la Chine, Hong Kong, et au Japon.
IUCN Red List<\/a>

Il se pla\u00eet sur les mares et les zones mar\u00e9cageuses, il mesure \u00e0 peine moins de 40 mm au total avec un abdomen de 26 \u00e0 27 mm.
Ci-dessous une femelle acrobate sur laquelle on constate ais\u00e9ment que l’apex des ailes n’est pas color\u00e9, m\u00eame s’il s’en faut de peu pour les ailes post\u00e9rieures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

L’odonatologie est toujours en marche et m\u00eame si de l’ext\u00e9rieur la taxonomie peut sembler fig\u00e9e, des surprises apparaissent r\u00e9guli\u00e8rement. Ainsi, en d\u00e9cembre 2025, on apprend que deux esp\u00e8ces communes et spectaculaires, d\u00e9crites depuis plus de 250\u00a0ans, sont en r\u00e9alit\u00e9 la m\u00eame esp\u00e8ce\u00a0; des analyses g\u00e9n\u00e9tiques (2) ont montr\u00e9 que Rhyothemis phyllis<\/a> est un synonyme junior de Rhyothemis variegata !<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00c9tymologie<\/strong>
Dans Rhyothemis<\/strong> (Hagen, 1867)(1) on reconnait le nom de Themis, la d\u00e9esse de l’Ordre et de la Justice, fr\u00e9quemment utilis\u00e9 encore apr\u00e8s Hagen pour nommer des Libellulidae, par imitation de ce que faisaient les anciens en utilisant des noms issus de la mythologie. La premi\u00e8re partie du nom vient sans doute, selon Fliedner, d\u2019une roche, la Rhyolite<\/a>, d\u00e9couverte en 1861 et dont le nom est compos\u00e9 de deux mots grecs signifiant \u2013couler<\/em>\u00a0et \u2013pierre<\/em>, cette roche magmatique montrant des bandes ou couches semblant avoir coul\u00e9 les unes sur les autres.
Variegata<\/strong>, du latin variegatus<\/em> qui signifie fait de plusieurs sortes de couleurs, panach\u00e9<\/em>, se rapporte bien s\u00fbr \u00e0 la coloration des ailes, panach\u00e9es de jaune et de noir.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
