Brachythemis leucosticta m\u00e2le est tellement proche de son cousin B. impartita qu’ils sont rest\u00e9s confondus pendant 170 ans\u202f! Et malheureusement les photos que j’ai pu faire d’un odonate sombre sur fond clair ne facilite pas la mise en \u00e9vidence des crit\u00e8res qui les s\u00e9parent.
B. leucosticta montre un abdomen plus massif et est globalement plus sombre, plus noir que marron.
Sur photo la discrimination se fait plus \u00ab\u00a0ais\u00e9ment\u00a0\u00bb sur la coloration des marges des pt\u00e9rostigmas et des veines sous ces pt\u00e9rostigmas; si les parties proximales des marges des pt\u00e9rostigmas sont sombres (soit la veine costale et la veine sous-costale), et que les veines sous celui-ci sont \u00e9galement sombres, c’est bien Brachythemis leucosticta.

Son aire de r\u00e9partition reste encore impr\u00e9cise, et le restera sans doute encore longtemps \u00e9tant donn\u00e9 la difficult\u00e9 \u00e0 le diff\u00e9rencier de son cousin.
Cependant, les donn\u00e9es certaines le limite au grand sud de l’Afrique, de l’est de l’Afrique du Sud (ou je l’avais d\u00e9j\u00e0 rencontr\u00e9<\/a>) et Madagascar \u00e0 l’\u00c9thiopie \u00e0 l’est et au S\u00e9n\u00e9gal \u00e0 l’ouest.
IUCN Red List<\/a>
Son nom vernaculaire, Southern Banded Groundling, reprend sa r\u00e9partition sudiste et sa pr\u00e9dilection pour se poser au sol, tandis que B. impartita se voit attribuer un pr\u00e9fixe nordique, Northern Banded Groundling.
Il mesure en moyenne 30 mm et se trouve au bord des grands lacs, des \u00e9tangs et m\u00eame des rivi\u00e8res larges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On lui d\u00e9crit un comportement int\u00e9ressant (partag\u00e9 par B. impartita) ; il se d\u00e9place souvent avec les gros mammif\u00e8res (vaches, buffles, humains) restant \u00e0 leur proximit\u00e9 et m\u00eame en avant de leur progression afin de b\u00e9n\u00e9ficier de l’envol des petits insectes qui leur servent alors de proies. On conna\u00eet d’autres esp\u00e8ces agissant de la m\u00eame fa\u00e7on dont son cousin asiatique Brachythemis contaminata et au moins Erythemis vesiculosa en Am\u00e9rique centrale et du Sud.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
