Dans le jardin bois\u00e9 d'un lodge \u00e0 Yirgalem (altitude 1750 m) j'ai pu photographier plusieurs odonates, dont deux femelles Orthetrum. \u00c9tant en saison s\u00e8che, je n'ai pas vu de point d'eau \u00e0 proximit\u00e9 malgr\u00e9 mes recherches, mais il y en avait certainement \u00e9tant donn\u00e9 la jeunesse de certaines.
Mais celle ci-dessus et ci-dessous semble bien mature avec son thorax et abdomen bien color\u00e9s et ses yeux ayant perdu leur coloration laiteuse et ind\u00e9finie. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

M\u00eame en France o\u00f9 nous n'avons que 4 Orthetrum les femelles sont parfois difficiles \u00e0 identifier\u202f; il y en a actuellement 11 recens\u00e9s en \u00c9thiopie. Et s'il existe une cl\u00e9 d'identification des m\u00e2les (1), il n'en existe pas pour les femelles.
Il faut donc se fier aux photos que l'on trouve sur le Web ou dans les documents scientifiques\u202f; le mieux est encore de faire corriger sa copie par K-D. Dijkstra, ce qui a \u00e9t\u00e9 fait ici.
Selon Kirby, il mesure entre 39 et 43 mm.

Il est \u00e9tonnant de lire dans le document dans lequel Kirby a d\u00e9crit l'esp\u00e8ce (2) qu'il a trouv\u00e9 les sub adultes ressemblant \u00e0 Orthetrum sabina<\/a>... Cela ne m'est vraiment pas venu \u00e0 l'esprit quand j'ai aper\u00e7u cette femelle. Il existe certainement une ressemblance, assez normale de la part de 2 Orthetrum, mais il est vrai que les femelles ont toutes les deux les appendices anaux clairs et des expansions ventrales sur le 8\u00b0 segment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On d\u00e9crit deux sous-esp\u00e8ces qui sont tr\u00e8s proches puisque les genitalia sous le S2 ne montrent pas de diff\u00e9rence. L'une, ici pr\u00e9sent\u00e9e, qui occupe approximativement toute l'Afrique subsaharienne sauf l'extr\u00eame sud de l'Afrique du Sud, l'autre O. julia capicola se limitant au sud de l'Afrique du Sud et dont la principale diff\u00e9rence est que les immatures ont une teinte rouge vraiment diff\u00e9rente et que les pt\u00e9rostigmas des adultes sont clairs.
