C’est lors d’un arr\u00eat dans une station service que j’ai pu photographier cette Dythemis sterilis femelle qui se tenait dans le foss\u00e9 d’une autoroute ; tr\u00e8s craintive, je n’ai pas pu l’approcher.
J’avais d\u00e9j\u00e0 rencontr\u00e9 cette esp\u00e8ce facile \u00e0 identifier au Panama<\/a> et au Costa Rica<\/a> ; m\u00e2les comme femelles portent ces traces jaunes sur l’abdomen (deux petits points tr\u00e8s discrets sur S8) et se posent les ailes plus bas que l’abdomen et ce dernier souvent sur\u00e9lev\u00e9 ce qui leur donne leur nom anglais g\u00e9n\u00e9rique de Setwing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Il mesure 40 mm et son aire de r\u00e9partition s’\u00e9tend \u00e0 travers l’Am\u00e9rique Centrale, du Mexique au Venezuela et \u00e0 la Colombie et aux Antilles.

Il se plait dans les eaux courantes ou faiblement courantes bien v\u00e9g\u00e9talis\u00e9es.
En anglais, il prend le nom de Brown setwing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00c9tymologie<\/strong>
Dythemis (1)<\/strong>, du mot grec dy <\/em>qui signifie deux<\/em> et de Themis. Il faut supposer que si Hagen a choisi Themis, \u2013 d\u00e9esse grecque de l\u2019ordre et de la justice, c\u2019est \u00e0 la fois pour respecter la \u00ab mode \u00bb qui consistait \u00e0 donner un nom en rapport avec la mythologie, tr\u00e8s en vogue \u00e0 cette \u00e9poque, et parce qu\u2019elle est particuli\u00e8rement bien adapt\u00e9e \u00e0 la taxonomie, science qui vise \u00e0 d\u00e9crire et ordonner et classer les familles, genres et esp\u00e8ces. \u00ab\u00a0Deux\u00a0\u00bb pourrait faire r\u00e9f\u00e9rence au 10\u00b0 segment de la femelle qui pr\u00e9sente deux tubercules.
Sterilis<\/strong>, du latin sterilis<\/em>, pour st\u00e9rile<\/em>, inf\u00e9cond<\/em>. Je ne suis pas parvenu \u00e0 retrouver la description de Hagen concernant cette libellule d\u00e9j\u00e0 d\u00e9crite par Rambur sous le nom de Libellula tessellata. Je suppose qu’elle a fait l’objet d’une publication ant\u00e9rieure \u00e0 1861 et je ne peux donc expliquer le choix de cet \u00e9tonnant \u00e9pith\u00e8te sp\u00e9cifique.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
