Ce n’est qu’en 1988 que J\u00fcrg Demarmels a mis en \u00e9vidence l’existence de deux esp\u00e8ces qui jusque-l\u00e0 \u00e9taient consid\u00e9r\u00e9es comme synonymes, soit Orthemis discolor et O. ferruginea. La photo ci-dessus permet de voir la principale diff\u00e9rence des m\u00e2les, d’ailleurs la seule qui semble vraiment constante entre ces deux esp\u00e8ces cousines ; le front de Orthemis discolor est rouge, celui de O. ferruginea est sombre, violac\u00e9, presque m\u00e9tallis\u00e9 comme on peut le voir ici<\/a>.
On note les veines ant\u00e9rieures noires alors que celles que montre la photo de O. ferruginea en pop-up sont rouge\u00e2tres. La partie sup\u00e9rieure des yeux de O. discolor est rouge et on constate que celle de O. ferruginea est brun\u00e2tre.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On note sur le sujet ci-dessus que le thorax est plus violac\u00e9 que l’abdomen ce qui est souvent donn\u00e9 comme un crit\u00e8re d’identification des m\u00e2les O. ferruginea; Dennis Paulson (1) fait bien remarquer que les m\u00e2les O. discolor peuvent pr\u00e9senter cette diff\u00e9rence de coloration et j’ai la certitude, par une vue \u00e9loign\u00e9e de la face<\/a>, que ce m\u00e2le est bien O. discolor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mais il est vrai que O. discolor est parfois tr\u00e8s rouge et le soir tombant, je n’ai d’abord pas cru avoir affaire \u00e0 lui sur ce petit bassin<\/a> d’un lodge de Chichen Itza, tellement il me semblait rouge vif. En am\u00e9ricain, il prend le nom de Carmine skimmer<\/em>.
Il mesure entre 47 et 53 mm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

M\u00e2les immatures et femelles sont par contre faciles \u00e0 diff\u00e9rencier de O. ferruginea, car la face lat\u00e9rale de leur thorax porte tr\u00e8s peu de marques claires (ici pour comparaison un m\u00e2le immature O. ferruginea<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Je n’ai aper\u00e7u qu’une femelle en vol, en ponte, toujours sur le bassin du lodge et on constate \u00e9galement son thorax presque uni (pour comparaison une femelle O. ferruginea<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On le rencontre du Texas \u00e0 l’Argentine et j’avais eu la chance de le voir d\u00e9j\u00e0 au Panama<\/a>, au Costa Rica<\/a>, au Br\u00e9sil<\/a>, et en Colombie<\/a>.

Orthemis<\/strong>, du grec\u00a0ortho<\/em>, \u2013droit<\/em>\u00a0et de Themis, la d\u00e9esse de L\u2019Ordre et de la Justice, souvent utilis\u00e9 pour nommer des Libellulidae, par imitation de ce que faisaient les anciens en utilisant des noms issus de la mythologie. On lit dans Hagen (1861) qui a cr\u00e9\u00e9 le genre : \u00ab\u00a0Le premier secteur du triangle rectiligne\u00a0\u00bb, une caract\u00e9ristique du genre.
Discolor<\/strong>, du latin discolor signifie une autre couleur<\/em>, pas de la m\u00eame couleur<\/em>. Dans cette esp\u00e8ce (comme dans beaucoup d’autres Libellulidae !), le m\u00e2le et la femelle sont d’une couleur diff\u00e9rente (d’une autre couleur) : \u00ab\u00a0(\u2642) rouge\u00e2tre ou couleur de brique (\u2640)\u00a0\u00bb.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
