Elle est presque enti\u00e8rement verte, ce qui est exceptionnel pour les libellules, avec les trois premiers segments abdominaux tr\u00e8s dilat\u00e9s et les autres tr\u00e8s subitement r\u00e9tr\u00e9cis. Les pattes sont longues et garnies de tr\u00e8s fortes \u00e9pines.<br>Son aire de distribution est immense, du sud des \u00c9tats-Unis \u00e0 l&rsquo;Argentine : <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iucnredlist.org\/species\/164958\/80682914#geographic-range\">IUCN Red List<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Erythemis<\/strong>\u00a0(Hagen, 1861) (1) du grec\u00a0<em>e\u030drythr\u00f3s<\/em>, rouge et de Themis. Il faut supposer que si Hagen a choisi Themis, \u2013 d\u00e9esse grecque de l\u2019ordre et de la justice, c\u2019est \u00e0 la fois pour respecter la \u00ab\u00a0mode\u00a0\u00bb qui consistait \u00e0 donner un nom en rapport avec la mythologie, tr\u00e8s en vogue \u00e0 cette \u00e9poque, et parce qu\u2019elle est particuli\u00e8rement bien adapt\u00e9e \u00e0 la taxonomie, science qui vise \u00e0 d\u00e9crire et ordonner et classer les familles, genres et esp\u00e8ces. Quant au qualificatif \u00ab\u00a0rouge\u00a0\u00bb, il s\u2019explique par le fait que Hagen a inclus dans ce nouveau genre trois esp\u00e8ces dont l\u2019abdomen des m\u00e2les est rouge ou ferrugineux.<br><strong>Vesiculosa<\/strong> (1), du latin <em>vesicula<\/em>, pour <em>petite ampoule,<\/em> et du suffixe <em>osus<\/em>, qui signifie <em>plein de<\/em>, <em>qui a beaucoup de\u2026<\/em> Dans la premi\u00e8re description, Fabricius dit \u00e0 deux reprises : \u00ab Fronte elevata, vesiculosa \u00bb [avec un front sur\u00e9lev\u00e9, spectaculaire par des structures v\u00e9siculaires]. Il a donc pens\u00e9 que cette information \u00e9tait tr\u00e8s pertinente.
