Perithemis tenera, ce tout petit Libellulidae \u00e9tait trop loin de moi pour que je puisse en faire une bonne photo. Sur cette lagune il y avait d’ailleurs plus de tortues et d’alligators que de libellules, et je n’ai aper\u00e7u que cet individu et un Ischnura ramburii, de plus sous un ciel bien sombre.
Mais alors que cinq ans plus tard, je m’appr\u00eate \u00e0 partager cette donn\u00e9e sur iNaturalist, je m’aper\u00e7ois que j’ai manqu\u00e9 une information importante : en effet, j’ai chang\u00e9 le titre de cette publication qui s’appelait initialement Perithemis mooma. Cette esp\u00e8ce a \u00e9t\u00e9 synonymis\u00e9e avec Perithemis tenera en 2020 par Dennis Paulson (1) et ils ne composent plus qu’une seule et m\u00eame esp\u00e8ce.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Je ne m’\u00e9tais jamais trouv\u00e9 dans la situation d’avoir \u00e0 choisir entre P. mooma et tenera pour une identification, car Perithemis tenera \u00e9tait jusque-l\u00e0 cens\u00e9 \u00eatre une esp\u00e8ce nord-am\u00e9ricaine, grossi\u00e8rement du Canada au Mexique avec une pr\u00e9dominance dans l’est de cette aire et les am\u00e9ricains l’appelaient Eastern amberwing. Perithemis mooma reprenait le relais plus au sud et je l’avais rencontr\u00e9 en Colombie<\/a>, au Br\u00e9sil<\/a> et au Panama<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On l’identifie assez facilement par son motif abdominal singulier, qu’on voit bien ci-dessous, mais aussi par ses marques thoraciques jaunes, ses pattes claires et le fait que le supratriangle de son aile ant\u00e9rieure ne soit travers\u00e9 par aucune nervure (free subtriangle) ; c’est le seul Perithemis \u00e0 montrer cette caract\u00e9ristique. Ici<\/a>, je montre la nomenclature des espaces alaires pour un Uracis siemensi (et non siemensis, faute sur l’image !).<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Il mesure 22 mm avec une aile post\u00e9rieure de 18 mm.
On le rencontre en principe sur des pi\u00e8ces d’eau ouvertes, mares, \u00e9tangs, parfois m\u00eame sur les parties calmes des rivi\u00e8res.

Avec la synonymisation, l’aire de r\u00e9partition de Perithemis tenera est devenue gigantesque, du Canada \u00e0 l’Argentine.
Je ne mets le lien habituel vers l’IUCN<\/a> qu’\u00e0 titre de curiosit\u00e9, car il n’est pas \u00e0 jour…<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00c9tymologie (2)
Le genre Perithemis<\/strong> a \u00e9t\u00e9 cr\u00e9\u00e9 par Hagen en 1861, du grec peri<\/em>, \u2013autour<\/em> et de Themis<\/em>, d\u00e9esse grecque de L\u2019Ordre et de la Justice. Themis est fr\u00e9quemment utilis\u00e9 encore apr\u00e8s Hagen, pour nommer des Libellulidae, par imitation de ce que faisaient les anciens en utilisant des noms issus de la mythologie. 
Ian Endersby et Heinrich Fliedner proposent cette origine : \u00ab Le nom se rapporte probablement \u00e0 l\u2019abdomen plus \u00e9troit \u00e0 la base (= autour du corps) qui est une caract\u00e9ristique distinctive \u00bb et Hagen \u00e9crit : \u00bb abdomen beaucoup plus court que les ailes, large, aplati, plus \u00e9troit \u00e0 la base \u00bb.
Tenera<\/strong>, du latin tener<\/em>, pour d\u00e9licat<\/em>, tendre<\/em>. La petitesse de l’esp\u00e8ce doit suffire \u00e0 expliquer cette \u00e9pith\u00e8te et Say \u00e9crit en 1839 dans sa premi\u00e8re description (Libellula tenera<\/em>) :\u00a0\u00bbLength nine tenths of an inch\u00a0\u00bb.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
