Perithemis domitia est facile \u00e0 s\u00e9parer des trois autres Perithemis mexicains par l’\u00e9tendu de ses taches thoraciques lat\u00e9rales.
Celui-ci se trouvait \u00e0 l’ombre, sur un petit bassin tr\u00e8s \u00e9troit d’un restaurant, de l’ordre de 50 cm de large sur quelques m\u00e8tres de long. Mais peut-\u00eatre n’a-t-il pas besoin de beaucoup plus en raison de sa toute petite taille, 21 \u00e0 25 mm. J’en avais rencontr\u00e9 un autre, une heure auparavant, sur un trou d’eau d’un m\u00e8tre \u00e0 peine de diam\u00e8tre, sur le site arch\u00e9ologique de Chichen Itza, encore \u00e0 l’ombre.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

J’avais d\u00e9j\u00e0 fait la r\u00e9flexion lorsque je l’avais rencontr\u00e9 au Panama\u202f; le triangle de l’aile ant\u00e9rieur est libre de veine, contrairement \u00e0 ce qu’\u00e9crit Heckman dans \u00ab\u00a0Encyclopedia of South American Aquatic Insects – Odonata-Anisoptera\u00a0\u00bb. Il s’agit d’une erreur, ou sans doute d’une variation g\u00e9ographique, les crit\u00e8res de veination devant toujours \u00eatre crois\u00e9s avec d’autres d\u00e9tails pour assurer une identification correcte.
On le trouve du sud des U.S.A. au Br\u00e9sil et \u00e0 l’\u00c9quateur. IUCN Red List<\/a>.
Je l’avais d\u00e9j\u00e0 rencontr\u00e9 au Panama<\/a> et au Costa Rica<\/a> o\u00f9 les anglo-saxons l’appellent Slough Amberwing<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00c9tymologie (1)
Le genre\u00a0Perithemis<\/strong>\u00a0a \u00e9t\u00e9 cr\u00e9\u00e9 par Hagen en 1861, du grec\u00a0peri<\/em>, \u2013autour<\/em>\u00a0et de\u00a0Themis<\/em>, d\u00e9esse grecque de L\u2019Ordre et de la Justice. Themis est fr\u00e9quemment utilis\u00e9 encore apr\u00e8s Hagen, pour nommer des Libellulidae, par imitation de ce que faisaient les anciens en utilisant des noms issus de la mythologie.\u00a0
Ian Endersby et Heinrich Fliedner proposent cette origine : \u00ab\u00a0Le nom se rapporte probablement \u00e0 l\u2019abdomen plus \u00e9troit \u00e0 la base (= autour du corps) qui est une caract\u00e9ristique distinctive\u00a0\u00bb et Hagen \u00e9crit :\u00a0\u00bb abdomen beaucoup plus court que les ailes, large, aplati, plus \u00e9troit \u00e0 la base\u00a0\u00bb.
Domitia<\/strong> est certainement un personnage f\u00e9minin de l’Antiquit\u00e9 romaine, comme c’est l’habitude pour les noms d’esp\u00e8ce de Drury. Il a ainsi pu penser \u00e0 Domitia longina, femme de l’empereur Domitien et elle-m\u00eame imp\u00e9ratrice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
