Je suis surpris de n’avoir dans mes photos qu’un seul m\u00e2le Paragomphus elpidius (Gomphidae) mais quatre femelles\u202f; comme pour les Libellulidae, on rencontre normalement plus souvent les m\u00e2les, les femelles \u00e9tant discr\u00e8tes.
Sans voir ses spectaculaires appendices anaux (les Anglais l’appellent Corkscrew hooktail !), l’identification n’est pas facile, car il ressemble beaucoup \u00e0 Paragomphus genei (Common hooktail) ; il s’en diff\u00e9rencie cependant par ses pt\u00e9rostigmas vraiment noirs alors que ceux de son cousin sont plus p\u00e2les au centre. Son thorax est marqu\u00e9 de lignes sombres plus fortes que celles de P. genei. Les foliations des segments 8 et 9 sont \u00e9galement plus \u00e9tendues et il n’a pas de point jaune \u00e0 l’extr\u00e9mit\u00e9 dorsale de S10.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Il est aussi plus grand que Paragomphus genei et il atteint 43 \u00e0 50 mm. Il fr\u00e9quente les berges des rivi\u00e8res v\u00e9g\u00e9talis\u00e9es et bois\u00e9es et celui-ci se trouvait non loin d’une zone de rapides sur le Zamb\u00e8ze<\/a>, litt\u00e9ralement \u00e0 quelques dizaines de m\u00e8tres de la Zambie.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On utilise les m\u00eames crit\u00e8res pour identifier les femelles : le thorax vert qui nous limite \u00e0 P. genei et Paragomphus elpidius. Les pt\u00e9rostigmas noirs sans zone p\u00e2le centrale \u00e9limine P. genei.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

En Namibie, l’esp\u00e8ce se limite \u00e0 la bande de Caprivi mais plus \u00e0 l’est de l’Afrique, on la trouve depuis l’est de l’Afrique du Sud jusqu’au nord du Congo, de l’Ouganda et du Kenya.

\u00c9tymologie<\/span><\/strong>
Dans Suhling & Martens (1)) on peut trouver l’\u00e9tymologie du nom d’esp\u00e8ce de presque tous les odonates namibiens\u202f; elpidius<\/em> <\/strong>du grec elpid<\/em> pour esp\u00e9rance<\/em> en r\u00e9f\u00e9rence au Cap de Bonne Esp\u00e9rance. La localit\u00e9 de l’holotype est pourtant au Kwazulu-Natal, mais pour Ris, entomologiste suisse qui n’\u00e9tait jamais venu dans la r\u00e9gion, le Cap de Bonne esp\u00e9rance semblait tout proche…
Quant \u00e0 Paragomphus<\/strong>, il a \u00e9t\u00e9 cr\u00e9\u00e9 par Cowley, en 1934 pour remplacer le nom Mesogomphus<\/em> F\u00f6rster, 1906 pr\u00e9occup\u00e9 par un poisson. Du grec para<\/em>, pour \u00e0 c\u00f4t\u00e9 de <\/em>pour signifier que ce genre est proche du genre Gomphus. Gomphus qui vient, lui, d\u2019un mot grec qui signifie\u00a0cheville<\/em>\u00a0ou\u00a0boulon<\/em>, en r\u00e9f\u00e9rence \u00e0 la forme de l\u2019abdomen (de la plupart des esp\u00e8ces), dilat\u00e9 \u00e0 l’extr\u00e9mit\u00e9 par des appendices anaux parfois spectaculaires et massifs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cinq mois apr\u00e8s avoir publi\u00e9 cet article, j’ai retrouv\u00e9 dans mes photos cette femelle immature que j’ai d’ailleurs eu du mal \u00e0 identifier, car elle n’a pas du tout de vert sur le thorax. Mais le pattern thoracique et abdominal est suffisamment convainquant pour assurer l’identification.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
