Paragomphus cataractae est une raret\u00e9, d’ailleurs, il est difficile d’en trouver des photos sur le Web. Il est facile \u00e0 identifier, il est le seul \u00e0 montrer un thorax vert pomme pratiquement d\u00e9pourvu de lignes sombres.
Phil Benstead, tour leader, nous amenait sur ce site pour la 4\u00b0 fois, car il nous manquait encore certains Gomphidae locaux et c’est en repartant vers les v\u00e9hicules, le long du chemin forestier, \u00e0 une centaine de m\u00e8tres du Zamb\u00e8ze et de ses rapides, que l’un d’entre nous a fait cette belle d\u00e9couverte.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

C’est en effet une esp\u00e8ce typique des larges rivi\u00e8res et surtout de leurs zones de rapides, tout comme Platycypha caligata et Zygonyx natalensis que nous rencontrerons plus tard sur l’Okavango, \u00e0 Popa Falls.
D’ailleurs, son nom d’esp\u00e8ce cataractae<\/em> souligne sa pr\u00e9f\u00e9rence pour les courants rapides, cataractae<\/em> signifiant \u00ab\u00a0des rapides\u00a0\u00bb ou \u00ab\u00a0des chutes d’eau\u00a0\u00bb. La description originale de l’esp\u00e8ce a \u00e9t\u00e9 faite \u00e0 partir de sujet pris dans les rapides des Victoria Falls et Katambora, donc sur le Zamb\u00e8ze \u00e9galement, \u00e0 une soixantaine de kilom\u00e8tres seulement du lieu de ces photos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Son abdomen mesure environ 30 mm (sans les appendices anaux) soit une longueur totale d’environ 45 mm.
L’esp\u00e8ce a une distribution tr\u00e8s limit\u00e9e en Namibie\u00a0: de l’endroit o\u00f9 nous l’avons observ\u00e9, \u00e0 Katima Mulilo sur le Zamb\u00e8ze jusqu’aux Victoria Falls et sur un tributaire du Zamb\u00e8ze, sur l’Okavango River \u00e0 Popa Falls et sur la Kunene River \u00e0 Epupa Falls. Il y aurait aussi une donn\u00e9e du nord de la Zambie.
