Orthetrum julia est localis\u00e9 en Namibie et le parc national du plateau de Waterberg est une de ces zones. Il est appel\u00e9 Orthetrum julia falsum alors qu’en Afrique du Sud, dans la r\u00e9gion du Cap, on d\u00e9crit une esp\u00e8ce diff\u00e9rente Orthetrum julia capicola; ce sont tr\u00e8s certainement deux esp\u00e8ces diff\u00e9rentes, distingu\u00e9es plus facilement distingu\u00e9es par leur nom anglais, la premi\u00e8re Julia Skimmer (celle pr\u00e9sente en Namibie) et l’autre Cape Skimmer.
Mais Orthetrum julia falsum se distingue ais\u00e9ment<\/em> de tous les autres Orthetrum de la r\u00e9gion par ses pt\u00e9rostigmas tr\u00e8s sombres (le Cape Skimmer poss\u00e8de des pt\u00e9rostigmas clairs).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Il ressemble aussi beaucoup \u00e0 Orthetrum brachiale et stemmale dont on le s\u00e9pare aussi (hormis les pt\u00e9rostigmas) par le nombre de cellules d\u00e9doubl\u00e9es au-dessus de la veine radiale suppl\u00e9mentaire (Rspl). Pour O. stemmale, on en compte 11 \u00e0 29 (total des quatre ailes), pour O. brachiale, elles sont \u00ab\u00a0nombreuses\u00a0\u00bb (sans doute en nombre comparable \u00e0 O. stemmale) alors que pour O. julia, il n’y en a pas ou seulement une ou deux par aile.
Il n’est pas toujours facile de compter les cellules d\u00e9doubl\u00e9es dans la Rspl… Le sujet ci-dessus n’en montre qu’une au total des trois ailes, car je ne parviens pas \u00e0 compter celles de l’aile post\u00e9rieure droite malgr\u00e9 d’autres photos. Le sujet de la premi\u00e8re photo en comptait 2 pour les quatre ailes. Ci-dessous cet autre m\u00e2le n’a pas de cellule d\u00e9doubl\u00e9e.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Il mesure en moyenne 44 mm.
Il fr\u00e9quente les rivi\u00e8res et les ruisseaux et semble peu adapt\u00e9 aux mares saisonni\u00e8res, car la dur\u00e9e de d\u00e9veloppement de sa larve est d’environ 60 jours.
Ci-dessous un m\u00e2le immature qui montre un pattern abdominal sp\u00e9cifique, avec les segments 7 \u00e0 9 compl\u00e8tement noirs.

Enfin une femelle o\u00f9 l’on retrouve les segments 7 \u00e0 10 noirs contrastant avec les appendices anaux blancs. On note \u00e9galement les importantes expansions ventrales du 8\u00b0 segment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Un mois et demi apr\u00e8s avoir r\u00e9dig\u00e9 cet article, je rajoute cette femelle en ponte. Bien qu’elle ait \u00e9t\u00e9 identifi\u00e9e sur place, toujours le 08\/02\/2020, pr\u00e8s du plateau de Waterberg, comme Orthetrum julia, j’ai eu des doutes et j’ai voulu en faire une femelle O. abbotti. Mais quelques conseils m’ont rendu la raison, en particulier la couleur des yeux (marron et bleu en dessous pour O. abbotti femelle), les motifs thoraciques affirm\u00e9s alors que ceux d’O. abbotti sont tr\u00e8s discrets, et les cerco\u00efdes blancs (ceux d’O. abbotti ne le sont pas). Mais comme on peut le constater, le motif abdominal des derniers segments n’est pas classique pour O. julia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Il occupe tout le sud de l’Afrique du S\u00e9n\u00e9gal \u00e0 la Somalie jusqu’en Afrique du Sud sauf le d\u00e9sert du Kalahari et curieusement le sud de l’Angola et la bande de Caprivi en Namibie (IUCN et Suhling et Martens).
