Cette page concernant Agriocnemis gratiosa a \u00e9t\u00e9 revue et compl\u00e9t\u00e9e en 2025 avec ajout de nombreuses photos.<\/em>

J’avais d\u00e9j\u00e0 bri\u00e8vement rencontr\u00e9 Agriocnemis gratiosa, un tout petit Coenagrionidae en Afrique du Sud<\/a>, sans parvenir \u00e0 en faire de meilleures photos.
Cet apr\u00e8s-midi, sur une grande mare \u00e0 Kalambesa le temps est pourtant assez clair encore (une averse va arriver…) mais ces Agriocnemis se cachent assez bas dans les herbes et il est tr\u00e8s difficile de faire des photos in situ sans avoir une brindille qui cache en partie le sujet\u202f; de plus, dans ces fouillis de brindilles, la lumi\u00e8re est plus faible. D\u00e9rang\u00e9s, ils viennent se poser un peu plus haut, mais c’est alors le vent qui, faisant bouger les supports, rend les photos hasardeuses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

C’est certaiment l’Agriocnemis le plus commun dans les zones que nous avons prospect\u00e9es.
Comme toujours, ce sont les appendices anaux qui font la diff\u00e9rence entre ces petits sujets et les appendices anaux inf\u00e9rieurs<\/a> (paraproctes) de ceux-ci sont longs, nettement plus que les sup\u00e9rieurs (cerques).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mais il pr\u00e9sente \u00e9galement un motif sp\u00e9cifique sur les 7\u1d49 et 8\u1d49 segments et il faut noter la forme du lobe post\u00e9rieur de son pronotum, qui le diff\u00e9rencie de A. exilis ; le pronotum de ce dernier montre un bord compl\u00e8tement arrondi, alors que seulement le lobe post\u00e9rieur est arrondi pour notre esp\u00e8ce.

Noter la forme arrondie du lobe post\u00e9rieur du pronotum, lobe bien individualis\u00e9. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Il mesure 24 \u00e0 26 mm et se plait dans les eaux calmes et peu profondes, mares ou places tranquilles des rivi\u00e8res, pour peu que les berges soient envahies d’herbes.
On rencontre le Gracious Wisp essentiellement \u00e0 l’est de l’Afrique, du Sud-Soudan au nord-est de l’Afrique du Sud, \u00e0 travers l’Ouganda, la Tanzanie, le Mozambique et la Zambie, alors qu’\u00e0 l’ouest, il atteint les pays bordant la bande de Caprivi en Namibie, soit l’Angola et le Botswana.

Les femelles passent des stades color\u00e9s tr\u00e8s spectaculaires et lorsqu’elles sont jeunes, elles sont rouges et noires. La meilleure fa\u00e7on de les s\u00e9parer est de recourrir \u00e0 l’examen de leur pronotum et de leur plaque ou lame mesostigmale (mesostigmal laminae pour Pinhey, 1974).
Ici, on voit que le bord post\u00e9rieur du pronotum est relev\u00e9 et que la lame m\u00e9sostigmale, juste en arri\u00e8re montre deux lobes sublat\u00e9raux dont l’apex est clair, et se terminent lat\u00e9ralement par une tub\u00e9rosit\u00e9 claire \u00e9galement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 John Wilkinson, odonatologue Sud-Africain et auteur d’un excellent site web<\/a> sur les Odonates de son pays, j’ai eu acc\u00e8s \u00e0 la R\u00e9vision des Agriocnemis<\/em> de Pinhey (1974) qui m’avait tant manqu\u00e9 lorsque j’ai r\u00e9dig\u00e9 cette page en 2020. J’en ai extrait cette synth\u00e8se des pronotum et plaques m\u00e9sostigmales pour les quatre esp\u00e8ces que nous avons rencontr\u00e9es.
M\u00eame si on imagine que sur photo la plaque m\u00e9sostigmale peut ressembler \u00e0 celle de A. ruberrima, le bord post\u00e9rieur du pronotum est concave et non arrondi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00c9tymologie<\/strong>
Agriocnemis<\/strong>, du grec agrios pour sauvage, vivant dans les champs et Knemis \u2013 jambi\u00e8re ou legging, comme pour nos Platycnemis Europ\u00e9ens. D\u2019ailleurs Selys croyait les genres \u00e9troitement proches au regard des tibias, ce que je ne constate absolument pas. Ceux des Agriocnemis ne me semblent pas plus larges que ceux des autres Coenagrion. Mais \u00ab\u00a0cnemis\u00a0\u00bb dans beaucoup de noms compos\u00e9s de genre doit plut\u00f4t \u00eatre compris comme \u00ab\u00a0faisant partie des Coenagrionidae\u00a0\u00bb.
Gratiosa,<\/strong> du latin gratia<\/em> dont un des sens est le charme, l’attrait<\/em> auquel est ajout\u00e9 le suffixe -osus<\/em> qui signifie plein<\/em> de ou riche en<\/em> pour insister sur l’aspect \u00e9l\u00e9gant et attrayant de cette esp\u00e8ce.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
