Crocothemis sanguinolenta (Little scarlet) est classiquement d\u00e9crite comme une version r\u00e9duite de C. erythraea<\/a> (ici en \u00c9thiopie) et difficile \u00e0 diff\u00e9rencier (C. divisa<\/a> (ici au B\u00e9nin) extr\u00eamement rare en Namibie, et absent des r\u00e9gions visit\u00e9es); pour la taille c’est toujours tr\u00e8s d\u00e9licat \u00e0 appr\u00e9cier quand on ne voit pas les esp\u00e8ces l’une \u00e0 c\u00f4t\u00e9 de l’autre, et surtout quand on est dans un contexte totalement diff\u00e9rent. En tout cas, s’il ne m’est pas vraiment apparu plus court, il est plus fluet, l’abdomen moins large et plus en fuseau. Il mesure 32 \u00e0 38 mm tandis que C. erythraea atteint 34 \u00e0 44 mm.
Par contre, la coloration est assez diff\u00e9rente et il appara\u00eet plus terne, malheureusement, nous sommes nombreux \u00e0 avoir remarqu\u00e9 que les appareils photo Canon \u00e9taient peu fid\u00e8les aux tons rouges…<\/p>\n\n\n\n

– la pr\u00e9sence de petites taches ou traits noirs sur les segments 3 \u00e0 7 sur la car\u00e8ne lat\u00e9rale abdominale <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Leur habitat est aussi diff\u00e9rent car en Namibie Crocothemis sanguinolenta pr\u00e9f\u00e8re les ruisseaux rapides et la pr\u00e9sence de rochers, dans les milieux arides et en montagne. Il se perche sur les rochers et au sol. C’est sur un ruisseau (et \u00e0 proximit\u00e9) traversant le sentier pav\u00e9 d’un lodge (altitude 1400 m) que nous l’avons observ\u00e9.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Les femelles montrent \u00e9galement ces traits sur la car\u00e8ne lat\u00e9rale de l’abdomen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mais surtout elles diff\u00e8rent de C. erythraea par leur lame vulvaire; alors que celle de cette derni\u00e8re est pratiquement perpendiculaire \u00e0 l’abdomen, celle de Crocothemis sanguinolenta, bien visible \u00e9galement de profil, est longue et pointe vers l’arri\u00e8re (sous les 9\u00b0 et 10\u00b0 segments). Malheureusement, je n’ai pas cette vue sur un sujet vivant, seulement sur cette photo de ce sujet pi\u00e9g\u00e9 par une gramin\u00e9e, Setaria verticillata<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Son nom d’esp\u00e8ce provient du latin sanguinolentus<\/em>, \u00e9clabouss\u00e9 de sang, \u00e9voquant son abdomen rouge, tout comme erythraea<\/em> \u00e9voque aussi cette couleur rouge. Son nom anglais est Little Scarlet, celui de son cousin C. erythraea, plus massif, est Broad Scarlet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Il occupe largement tout le sud de l’Afrique, en dessous d’une ligne joignant le S\u00e9n\u00e9gal \u00e0 la Somalie. Mais, on le trouve aussi, plus localis\u00e9, en Arabie Saoudite, au Y\u00e9men, \u00e0 Oman, en Isra\u00ebl et en Jordanie.
