Kirby a d\u00e9crit Brachythemis lacustris, Libellulidae, \u00e0 partir de sujets de la collection du British Museum sous le nom de Trithemis (?) lacustris, introduisant un doute sur l’appartenance de l’esp\u00e8ce \u00e0 ce genre. Il ne l’a sans doute jamais vue en action sur le terrain et ignorait qu’on ne le trouve jamais… sur les lacs, mais toujours au long des rivi\u00e8res bord\u00e9es d’arbres ou des hautes herbes. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

S’il fait partie des Libellulidae rouges comme Crocothemis erythraea, Urothemis assignata, Tholymis tillarga ou Sympetrum fonscolombii, on ne peut gu\u00e8re le confondre qu’avec Trithemis … kirbyi<\/a> justement, mais qui \u00e9tait inconnu de Kirby, qui lui, le trouvait tr\u00e8s voisin de Crocothemis sanguinolenta<\/a> (alors Trithemis sanguinolenta).
Ils sont rouges tous les 2, avec une nervation partiellement rouge et de larges taches ambr\u00e9es sur les quatre ailes. Mais, le Red Groundling<\/em>, son nom local, 25 mm environ, est beaucoup plus petit que T. kirbyi, 33 mm, l’abdomen de ce dernier \u00e9tant plus fin, plus \u00e9lanc\u00e9.
Quand ils ne sont pas trop \u00e2g\u00e9s, ils montrent des pt\u00e9rostigmas bicolores, claires puis sombres dans leur partie externe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Brachythemis lacustris n’a pas de bleu derri\u00e8re les yeux, m\u00eame s’il a lui aussi de tr\u00e8s beaux yeux beaucoup plus fonc\u00e9s que ceux de T. kirbyi et toujours avec ces motifs si particuliers au genre Brachythemis, qu’on retrouve par exemple aussi sur Brachythemis contaminata<\/a> en Asie.

Ils sont tr\u00e8s communs en Namibie, sur les rives de l’Okavango ou du Zamb\u00e8ze, parfois en nombre, sans montrer de comportement territorial.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ci-dessous deux m\u00e2les immatures sur lesquels on voit tr\u00e8s bien le motif caract\u00e9ristique des yeux. Tr\u00e8s souvent, les Libellulidae m\u00e2les immatures ressemblent \u00e9norm\u00e9ment aux femelles et je suis un peu surpris de constater que ce n’est pas vraiment le cas ici, car comme on le verra, l’abdomen des femelles porte une forte marque sombre m\u00e9diane.

On rencontre l’esp\u00e8ce du S\u00e9n\u00e9gal \u00e0 l’Ethiopie jusqu’au Nord du Botswana, de la Namibie et de l’Afrique du Sud avec une population \u00e9galement au sud de ce pays.

Ci-dessous, \u00e0 gauche, \u00e0 Katima Mulilo, Wenela Border Post sur le Zamb\u00e8ze, le 17\/02\/2020 et \u00e0 droite, le 21\/02\/2020 sur l’Okavango \u00e0 Rundu.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sur les bords de l’Okavango ou du Zamb\u00e8ze, on rencontre ensemble B. lacustris et B. leucosticta. Si les m\u00e2les sont tr\u00e8s faciles \u00e0 diff\u00e9rencier, c’est un peu moins \u00e9vident pour les femelles qui n’ont pas les ailes color\u00e9es.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mais Brachythemis lacustris pr\u00e9sente une forte ligne m\u00e9diane noire sur l’abdomen, Brachythemis leucosticta, dont le thorax est \u00e9galement plus marqu\u00e9 de noir, en exhibe une autre de chaque c\u00f4t\u00e9 de l’abdomen comme on peut le voir en suivant ce lien<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

C’est une esp\u00e8ce tr\u00e8s dynamique, tr\u00e8s plaisante \u00e0 observer et dont les attroupements sont parfois spectaculaires, surtout quand le soleil projette la coloration ambr\u00e9e des ailes des m\u00e2les sur le support.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00c9tymologie<\/strong>
Brachythemis<\/strong>, du grec brachy<\/em> pour court<\/em>, pour insister sur l’abdomen court et trapu.
Lacustris<\/strong>, du latin lacus<\/em>, pour lac<\/em> auquel est ajout\u00e9 le suffixe adjectival ustris<\/em> qui indique une appartenance, une relation ou un lieu. Comme je l’ai d\u00e9j\u00e0 indiqu\u00e9, Kirby pensait que ce Brachythemis fr\u00e9quentait les lacs, alors qu’on ne le rencontre qu’aux abords des rivi\u00e8res.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
