Ce n’est qu’en octobre 2024, en pla\u00e7ant cette photo sur iNaturalist qu’elle a pris le nom de Nesciothemis sp. nov. C’est en effet une nouvelle esp\u00e8ce non encore d\u00e9crite connue d’Angola et s’\u00e9tendant vers le sud vraisemblablement jusqu’au delta de l’Okavango. Klaas-Douwe Dijkstra et Jens Kipping travaillent actuellement \u00e0 cerner sa r\u00e9partition et en feront prochainement la description officielle.
La diff\u00e9rence la plus visible est la quantit\u00e9 de noir sur le thorax ; tr\u00e8s \u00e9tendue pour cette esp\u00e8ce, elle se limite \u00e0 la partie ant\u00e9ro inf\u00e9rieure du thorax pour Nesciothemis farinosa. La coloration noire du 7\u00b0 segment abdominal pr\u00e9sente une forme en \u00ab\u00a0V\u00a0\u00bb, alors que la coloration noire s’\u00e9tend et envahit le S6 pour N. farinosa.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nesciothemis farinosa (Libellulidae) est commun en Namibie, en tout cas dans la bande de Caprivi. J’avais eu le plaisir de le rencontrer en Afrique du Sud<\/a> et surtout en \u00c9thiopie<\/a> o\u00f9 j’avais pu admirer des m\u00e2les semi immatures assez spectaculaires, moiti\u00e9 bleus, moiti\u00e9 jaunes. Mais je n’avais jamais vu de m\u00e2les pleinement matures, devenus bleus et noirs.

Les Eastern blacktail<\/em>, en anglais, mesurent environ 43 mm et sont ubiquistes acceptant aussi bien les eaux faiblement courantes que les mares. Ils se tiennent souvent au bord de l’eau sur des tiges \u00e9mergentes, surveillant leur territoire. \u00c0 quelque distance, il est assez facile de les confondre avec l’un des multiples Orthetrum bleu qui peuplent la r\u00e9gion, et c’est encore plus vrai pour les immatures et surtout les femelles, qui pour ajouter \u00e0 la confusion, montrent des expansions ventrales sur le 8\u00b0 segment ce qui est peu commun en dehors des Orthetrum (et apparent\u00e9s comme certains Orthemis am\u00e9ricains, ou Potamarcha congener en Asie).
Ci-dessous \u00e0 gauche, \u00e0 Rundu sur l’Okavango, le 11\/02\/20. \u00c0 droite, sur une mare, un bras mort de la Kwando River \u00e0 Singalamwe, le 16\/02\/2020, que nous avons partag\u00e9 avec un hippopotame<\/a> bien pacifique.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Le nom d’esp\u00e8ce n’a pas besoin de longues explications et traduit l’aspect farineux de leur pruine bleut\u00e9e.
Comme dit plus haut les m\u00e2les immatures ressemblent aux Orthetrum mais d\u00e8s qu’on approche la diff\u00e9rence est flagrante avec la bande claire qui parcourt le sommet de leur thorax et se prolonge entre les ailes.

L’apparence des femelles est tr\u00e8s proche de celle des m\u00e2les immatures; elles s’en distinguent bien s\u00fbr par les appendices anaux mais aussi par une discr\u00e8te tache sombre \u00e0 l’apex des ailes et par les expansions ventrales du S8, particuli\u00e8rement visibles sur la photo ci-dessous.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sa distribution occupe tout l\u2019est de l\u2019Afrique (Eastern blacktail), de l’Egypte \u00e0 l’Afrique du Sud, limit\u00e9e \u00e0 l\u2019ouest par une ligne de l’ouest l\u2019Angola \u00e0 l\u2019Egypte.
