Pseudagrion massaicum, que j’avais d\u00e9j\u00e0 rencontr\u00e9 en Afrique du Sud<\/a>, fait partie des Pseudagrion \u00e0 thorax et yeux rouges. Mais contrairement \u00e0 ceux avec lesquels on pourrait le confondre en Namibie, il n’est pas rouge que sur la face sup\u00e9rieure du thorax, mais \u00e9galement en dessous de la suture hum\u00e9rale et en ceci, il est unique. Ce caract\u00e8re devient moins \u00e9vident \u00e0 appr\u00e9cier quand les sujets sont \u00e2g\u00e9s, car bien que cette zone ne devient pas pruineuse comme la partie la plus inf\u00e9rieure du thorax, elle devient tr\u00e8s sombre.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Un autre caract\u00e8re distinctif tr\u00e8s int\u00e9ressant est la forme de la coloration noire sur la suture hum\u00e9rale; elle est fine (ce qui le diff\u00e9rencie par exemple de P. sjoestedti) mais elle s’affine, voire m\u00eame s’interrompt tr\u00e8s bri\u00e8vement avant de s’\u00e9largir fortement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Il mesure 29 \u00e0 38 mm et pr\u00e9f\u00e8re les eaux calmes ou faiblement courantes.
Les femelles montrent une bande sombre tr\u00e8s forte et nette sur les yeux surmont\u00e9e d’une autre plus discr\u00e8te.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Quand elles ne sont pas trop \u00e2g\u00e9es, ou n’ont pas trop de boue due \u00e0 la ponte sur les derniers segments, on constate des motifs sp\u00e9cifiques sur le 8\u00b0 et 9\u00b0 segment; la tache noire dorsale du S8 descend lat\u00e9ralement laissant un espace clair en avant et en arri\u00e8re (en principe…), tandis que le S9 sur une vue sup\u00e9rieure porte un triangle noir.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On retrouve tous ces d\u00e9tails d’identification sur cette jeune femelle Masai sprite, ci-dessous, la double barre sur les yeux, l’amincissement de la ligne noire sur la suture hum\u00e9rale et la forme sp\u00e9cifique de la tache sur S8 et S9.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On trouve Pseudagrion massaicum dans toute la partie sud de l’Afrique, depuis l’Angola \u00e0 l’ouest, mais \u00e0 l’est son aire de distribution remonte au nord jusqu’au Soudan et \u00e0 l’\u00c9thiopie.
