Nihonogomphus thomassoni mesure environ 62 mm (abdomen + appendices anaux 44 mm(1)) et aime \u00e0 se poser sur un rocher ou un support \u00e9mergent de la rivi\u00e8re pour surveiller son territoire. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Il est spectaculairement vert et porte une forte brosse de soies sur sa cr\u00eate frontale comme on peut le voir sur la photo ci-dessous. Ses auricules sont \u00e9galement tr\u00e8s d\u00e9velopp\u00e9es.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Il se pla\u00eet sur les ruisseaux limpides \u00e0 faible pente, en for\u00eat ou en aire ouverte. Nous l’avons rencontr\u00e9 sur une rivi\u00e8re courant sur un fond caillouteux, dans une aire ouverte<\/a>.
Les m\u00e2les se perchent assez bas sur le feuillage, pr\u00e8s de l’eau (1).
L’esp\u00e8ce est pr\u00e9sente dans le sud de la Chine (Guangxi, Guizhou, Hainan) et le nord du Vietnam.

\u00c9tymologie<\/strong>
Nihonogomphus<\/strong> ; le genre a \u00e9t\u00e9 cr\u00e9\u00e9 par Oguma (2) en 1926 \u00e0 partir de Nihon qui signifie Japon (en japonais) et de Gomphus. Oguma pensait que son Nihonogomphus viridis appartenait \u00e0 un genre exclusivement japonais. Gomphus<\/em>\u00a0vient d\u2019un mot grec qui signifie\u00a0cheville<\/em>\u00a0ou\u00a0boulon<\/em>, en r\u00e9f\u00e9rence \u00e0 la forme de l\u2019abdomen (de la plupart des esp\u00e8ces), qui ressemble, par sa dilatation terminale, \u00e0 une\u00a0cheville pour assembler les bateaux<\/em>.
Thomassoni<\/strong> ; Frederick Dampier Thomasson<\/em> (1850\u20131926) \u00e9tait un entomologiste amateur britannique et surtout un m\u00e9c\u00e8ne qui a financ\u00e9 et soutenu plusieurs exp\u00e9ditions de collecte en Asie du Sud-Est et en Chine \u00e0 la fin du XIXe si\u00e8cle. Le sp\u00e9cimen type de l’esp\u00e8ce a \u00e9t\u00e9 collect\u00e9 sur l’\u00eele de Hainan (Chine) par John Whitehead (1860\u20131899), un naturaliste et explorateur dont les exp\u00e9ditions ont \u00e9t\u00e9 financ\u00e9es en grande partie par F. D. Thomasson. Ce que Kirby a voulu souligner quand il a d\u00e9crit cette esp\u00e8ce dans la collection du British Museum.
