Durant ces 12 jours de prospection en Namibie, Crocothemis erythraea (Libellulidae) s’est av\u00e9r\u00e9 assez commun, mais sans doute moins qu’en France o\u00f9 il est parfois localement tr\u00e8s abondant. Sur les 2 photos ci-dessous, on note l’inconstance de la ligne noire qui parcourt l’abdomen. Cette ligne noire est d’ailleurs parfois utilis\u00e9e en Asie pour identifier Crocothemis servilia et on voit le peu de valeur de ce crit\u00e8re…<\/p>\n\n\n\n

En Namibie, on peut le confondre avec Sympetrum fonscolombii ou Trithemis kirbyi. Mais ce dernier montre des taches ambr\u00e9es \u00e9galement sur la base des ailes ant\u00e9rieures et S. fonscolombii pr\u00e9sente une bande claire qui lui barre le thorax. Il est \u00e9galement proche de Urothemis assignata mais les taches alaires basales de ce dernier sont tr\u00e8s sombres. On trouvera bien d’autres d\u00e9tails sur les pages consacr\u00e9es \u00e0 l’esp\u00e8ce en France<\/a> ou en \u00c9thiopie<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ci-dessus un jeune sujet pas encore rouge vif, et ci-dessous un sujet dont l’abdomen coud\u00e9 a sans doute \u00e9t\u00e9 ab\u00eem\u00e9 par un pr\u00e9dateur, et dont une aile reste curieusement tendue, ce qui ne l’emp\u00eachait d’ailleurs pas de voler.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

M\u00e2les comme femelles adoptent parfois la position dite de l’ob\u00e9lisque comme moyen de thermor\u00e9gulation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Il mesure 36 \u00e0 45 mm et se rencontre sur les \u00e9tangs et lacs, parfois des foss\u00e9s, et se montre encore moins difficile lors de ses migrations, ce qui explique sa facult\u00e9 \u00e0 \u00e9tendre son territoire.
Il a une aire de distribution gigantesque occupant quasiment toute l\u2019Afrique, jusqu\u2019\u00e0 l\u2019est de l\u2019Inde, et a connu une expansion remarquable vers le nord, colonisant l\u2019Europe centrale, du Sud et de l\u2019Ouest, et particuli\u00e8rement depuis une vingtaine d\u2019ann\u00e9es puisqu\u2019il est maintenant bien implant\u00e9 en Allemagne et en Hollande, et signal\u00e9 occasionnellement en Angleterre.

\u00c9tymologie<\/strong> Crocothemis eythraea
Brull\u00e9 a d\u00e9crit l’esp\u00e8ce dans le genre Libellula et c’est Brauer qui en a fait l’esp\u00e8ce type de son genre Crocothemis en 1868.
Crocothemis<\/strong>, du grec krokos<\/em> pour safran\u00e9<\/em> en r\u00e9f\u00e9rence \u00e0 la couleur de la base de l’aile et de Themis, d\u00e9esse grecque de l’ordre, de la justice.
Hagen en 1861 a cr\u00e9\u00e9 plusieurs noms de genres termin\u00e9s par le suffixe Themis, sans doute parce que d’autres noms de libellules comportaient des noms de dieux comme Echo ou Nehalennia. Le nom de la d\u00e9esse de l’ordre est particuli\u00e8rement bien adapt\u00e9 \u00e0 la taxonomie, science qui vise \u00e0 d\u00e9crire et ordonner les familles, genres et esp\u00e8ces. Brauer a repris le terme \u00ab\u00a0themis\u00a0\u00bb qui est devenu en quelque sorte une indication de l’appartenance au Libellulidae.
Erythraea<\/strong>, du latin erithraeus<\/em>, rouge<\/em>, pour la couleur \u00e9carlate du m\u00e2le mature et non pas pour une origine \u00e9rythr\u00e9enne (ancienne province d’\u00c9thiopie), car le nom de cet \u00c9tat vient aussi de la couleur rouge<\/em> de la mer qu’il borde. L’esp\u00e8ce a \u00e9t\u00e9 d\u00e9crite \u00e0 partir d’un sujet pris dans le P\u00e9loponn\u00e8se (Gr\u00e8ce actuelle).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
