Olpogastra lugubris (Libellulidae) est tr\u00e8s commun en Namibie au long des rivi\u00e8res et nous l’avons rencontr\u00e9 quasiment tous les jours, mais jamais en nombre. Il appartient \u00e0 un genre monosp\u00e9cifique et il est impossible \u00e0 confondre avec une autre esp\u00e8ce.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ce Bottletail, son nom local, se distingue de tous les autres Libellulidae par son abdomen tr\u00e8s mince et extraordinairement dilat\u00e9 pour les premiers segments, sa coloration jaune et noire, un peu \u00e0 la fa\u00e7on d’un Gomphidae avec un thorax sem\u00e9 de taches jaunes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Il mesure jusqu’\u00e0 62 mm avec une envergure de 89 mm et il n’h\u00e9site pas \u00e0 s’attaquer \u00e0 des proies importantes, ici un tr\u00e8s jeune Paragomphus elpidius m\u00e2le de pr\u00e8s de 50 mm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Le Libellulidae dont il est le plus proche par son habitus est Zygonoides fuelleborni qui a d’ailleurs d’abord \u00e9t\u00e9 rang\u00e9 dans le genre Olpogastra.
Il fr\u00e9quente les rivi\u00e8res en milieu ouvert, mais on le trouve aussi sur les mares et les lacs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Les femelles sont moins pr\u00e9sentes ou passent inaper\u00e7ues parmi leurs compagnons, car elles leur sont totalement ressemblantes, portant les m\u00eames motifs thoraciques et abdominaux. Leur abdomen est cependant un peu plus large.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

L’esp\u00e8ce est donc commune dans les zones humides de Namibie et elle est largement r\u00e9pandue dans presque toute l’Afrique sub-saharienne.

\u00c0 Popa Falls j’ai trouv\u00e9 une spectaculaire exuvie , spectaculaire par la longueur des \u00e9pines des derniers segments. Ce sont certainement des organes de d\u00e9fense passive de la larve contre les pr\u00e9dateurs, le plus souvent des poissons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
