Je ne me suis pas attard\u00e9 \u00e0 faire des photos de Pantala flavescens puisque je l’avais d\u00e9j\u00e0 rencontr\u00e9 dans 12 pays sur 3 continents. Mais il est toujours spectaculaire par la largeur de ses ailes post\u00e9rieures et son abdomen fusiforme qui en fait un odonate taill\u00e9 pour les vols \u00e0 longue distance (Wandering Glider, en anglais), et il est d’ailleurs capable de migrer (sur 4 g\u00e9n\u00e9rations tout de m\u00eame) de l’Inde \u00e0 l’est de l’Afrique, et de l’est de l’Afrique \u00e0 l’Inde en accompagnant les moussons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Il mesure 47 mm en moyenne et, je le mentionne pour les plus curieux, il p\u00e8se environ 0,310 g (1). Comme beaucoup d’odonates, il capture ses proies en vol et l’\u00e9tude cit\u00e9e pr\u00e9c\u00e9demment montre qu’en des conditions de laboratoire, il consomme quotidiennement une biomasse \u00e9quivalente \u00e0 plus des 2\/3 de son poids (224.51 mg). Pour le fun, pour un homme de 70 kg, cela repr\u00e9senterait 46 kg de nourriture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

En d\u00e9pouillant les photos, je me suis aper\u00e7u que je n’avais pas photographi\u00e9 de femelle \u00ab\u00a0normale\u00a0\u00bb, seulement celle ci-dessus avec son abdomen vrill\u00e9 de presque un demi-tour, soit un accident d’\u00e9mergence, soit quelque autre incident dans sa jeunesse, car la d\u00e9formation semble cicatris\u00e9e<\/em> ; elle ne pourra pas s’accoupler.

Cette autre femelle \u00e9tait pi\u00e9g\u00e9e par cette plante velcro qu’est Setaria verticillata<\/a> et un de mes compagnons l’en a d\u00e9livr\u00e9 :<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Enfin des photos de ce couple en ponte qui expliquent pourquoi je ne suis jamais lass\u00e9 d’observer les odonates et leur comportement, parfois insens\u00e9 ; il en est sans doute des libellules comme des hommes… Le lieu de ponte est un chemin de pav\u00e9s travers\u00e9, ou plut\u00f4t humidifi\u00e9 par le d\u00e9bordement d’un ruisseau ; il n’y a bien s\u00fbr pratiquement aucune chance que les \u0153ufs pondus puissent \u00e9clore, m\u00eame si on conna\u00eet les fantastiques capacit\u00e9s d’adaptation de la larve, acceptant n’importe quel type de milieu et en particulier les mares temporaires gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 la rapidit\u00e9 de son d\u00e9veloppement larvaire (38 – 65 jours).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sa r\u00e9partition mondiale est un feuilleton puisqu’elle est pr\u00e9sente sur tous les continents (sauf l’Antarctique) depuis sa d\u00e9couverte dans plusieurs pays d’Europe en 2019 et sa reproduction attest\u00e9e en Allemagne (2) et Suisse cette m\u00eame ann\u00e9e. Observ\u00e9e en France dans le Gard le 12\/08\/2019 (3), une nouvelle preuve de reproduction a \u00e9t\u00e9 apport\u00e9e cette ann\u00e9e (2020) en Pologne, encore un peu plus au nord que le signalement germanique de l’ann\u00e9e pr\u00e9c\u00e9dente (4).
Mais on ne peut parler d’autochtonie, car il s’agit d’\u00e9mergences issues de ponte par des sujets migrants, et non des sujets dont les larves auraient pass\u00e9 l’hiver dans ces r\u00e9gions.
