Phaon iridipennis est le seul Calopterygidae de Namibie (et d'Afrique du Sud) et il appartient \u00e0 un genre qui ne compte que 3 membres, iridipennis<\/em> et camerunensis<\/em> en Afrique sub-saharienne et rasoherinae<\/em> \u00e0 Madagascar.
Il mesure en moyenne 70 mm, ce qui en fait un insecte impressionnant et un des plus grands zygopt\u00e8res africains ; de ce fait, il est impossible de le confondre avec un autre genre.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nous n'avons malheureusement rencontr\u00e9 que des femelles, 2 jours de suite, pratiquement au m\u00eame endroit, \u00e0 proximit\u00e9 d'un petit bras rapide de l'Okavango, sous le couvert des arbres. Malheureusement, car comme tr\u00e8s souvent les m\u00e2les sont plus spectaculaires, et l'iridescence de leurs ailes est plus prononc\u00e9e comme on peut en avoir un indice sur la premi\u00e8re photo.
Cette iridescence est bien s\u00fbr \u00e0 l'origine de son nom d'esp\u00e8ce, irid<\/em> signifiant arc-en-ciel en grec et pennis<\/em> signifiant plume, patte. Elle prend d'ailleurs le nom de Glistening Demoiselle en anglais.
Son nom de genre renvoie sans doute simplement \u00e0 la beaut\u00e9 de l'esp\u00e8ce car Phaon dans la mythologie grecque \u00e9tait un vieux batelier passeur de l'ile de Lesbos qui a re\u00e7u d'Aphrodite un onguent qui a fait de lui un tr\u00e8s beau jeune homme.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Il fr\u00e9quente les ruisseaux et rivi\u00e8res en for\u00eat galerie ou dans les aires plus ouvertes des for\u00eats et se rencontre dans toute l'Afrique subsaharienne.
Je n'ai gard\u00e9 que des photos qui mettent le sujet en valeur, mais il ou elle se perche tr\u00e8s fr\u00e9quemment sur des branches et des rameaux morts, comme ci-dessous.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
