Le genre Rhyothemis est cher au c\u0153ur des amateurs d’odonates et je me souviens de ma surprise la premi\u00e8re fois que j’en ai rencontr\u00e9 un membre en Asie, le tr\u00e8s commun Rhyothemis variegata<\/a> au Cambodge. Ils sont imm\u00e9diatement identifiables par leurs ailes largement color\u00e9es.
Il y a 2 Rhyothemis en Namibie (5 en Afrique, plus de 20 dans le monde), Rhyothemis fenestrina est celui qui montre la coloration alaire la plus \u00e9tendue, avec des reflets iris\u00e9s et changeant en fonction de la position de l’observateur et de la lumi\u00e8re.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ce nom de genre peut sembler complexe ; Themis<\/em> est cependant tr\u00e8s utilis\u00e9 pour nommer les Libellulidae ; c’est la d\u00e9esse grecque de la justice, du droit de l’ordre et semble tout \u00e0 fait appropri\u00e9 pour mettre de l’ordre parmi les odonates. Rhyo<\/em>, vient de Rhyolite, une roche magmatique comportant des inclusions de nombreux autres min\u00e9raux, r\u00e9cemment d\u00e9crite quand Hagen en 1867 a cr\u00e9\u00e9 le genre et qui montre des couleurs variables et irr\u00e9guli\u00e8res comme les ailes de ces odonates.
Fenestrina est plus parlant (fenestra en latin) et \u00e9voque les fen\u00eatres hyalines des ailes entour\u00e9es de zones sombres.
Voici la description de Rambur dans Histoire Naturelle des Insectes – N\u00e9vropt\u00e8res – 1842<\/em> :<\/p>\n\n\n\n

LIBELLULA FENESTRINA, mihi.
Flavo-rufescens; alis dilute fusco-rufescentibus, macula apicali,
anticis macula m\u00e9dia et alla postica obsolela, posticis m\u00e9dia et
aliis ad basim reticulatis, hyalinis.
De la grandeur de la Flaveola (<\/em>Sympetrum flaveolum !), mais les ailes plus courtes. T\u00eate ayant
la face jaune. Corps jaune avec des nuances rousses. Ailes d’un brun
roux p\u00e2le, ayant un reflet violet plus ou moins dor\u00e9, le sommet des quatre,
une tache un peu au del\u00e0 du milieu, une autre peu sensible post\u00e9rieurement
et en s’approchant de la base aux sup\u00e9rieures, et plusieurs
autres \u00e0 la base des inf\u00e9rieures r\u00e9ticul\u00e9es, transparentes, bord post\u00e9,
rieur un peu transparent; pt\u00e9rostigma couleur de l’aile ; triangle r\u00e9ticul\u00e9
(5, 6 ar\u00e9oles).

M. Serville.<\/em>

Il mesure pr\u00e8s de 30 mm, et on note, comme pour tous les membres du genre, la largeur des ailes post\u00e9rieures ; ils sont faits pour voler longuement et on les observe souvent regroup\u00e9s en essaim, \u00e0 plusieurs m\u00e8tres de haut, se nourrissant inlassablement de petits insectes. Ils fr\u00e9quentent les marais.
Ils ont un vol assez particulier, un vol battu comme un papillon ce qui leur vaut le nom de genre anglais Fluttering (Rhyothemis mariposa insiste sur ce d\u00e9tail puisque mariposa<\/em> signifie papillon<\/em> en espagnol).

Les femelles montrent les m\u00eames motifs alaires, un peu plus clairs, mais tout aussi spectaculaires.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On le rencontre dans toute l’Afrique subtropicale, sauf \u00e0 l’est en Somalie, Mozambique et Zimbabwe, et en Afrique du Sud.
