J’avais d\u00e9j\u00e0 tr\u00e8s bri\u00e8vement rencontr\u00e9 Tholymis tillarga (Libellulidae) au Sri Lanka<\/a> au bord d’un lac, de tr\u00e8s bonne heure le matin, un couple en ponte, mais je n’avais pas pu faire de photos de l’insecte pos\u00e9. Il est commun en Namibie, parfois abondant localement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Il est tr\u00e8s peu actif dans la journ\u00e9e, pr\u00e9f\u00e9rant l’aube ou la soir\u00e9e, et se pose dans les arbustes, le plus souvent cach\u00e9 \u00e0 l’ombre. D’ailleurs durant ces 12 jours de prospection, je n’en ai pas vu voler sauf ceux que nous avons d\u00e9rang\u00e9s.
Les m\u00e2les sont spectaculaires avec leurs taches alaires ambr\u00e9es puis nuageuses, bien que le sujet ci-dessus n’ait que la moiti\u00e9 du d\u00e9cor !
En raison de cette coloration alaire, ils sont faciles \u00e0 identifier, aucun autre odonate en Afrique ne porte ce type de motif.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

C’est un migrant, mais il est permanent dans les zones tropicales, parfois en nombre comme dans les plaines inond\u00e9es de l’Okavango ou chaque arbuste semblait en abriter un ou plusieurs. Mais il accepte les eaux lentiques, bassin, mares ou lacs.
Il mesure selon les sources 44 \u00e0 48 mm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Les immatures sont, comme toujours, tr\u00e8s diff\u00e9rents des sujets matures et tr\u00e8s ressemblants aux femelles, comme on le verra sur les \u00ab\u00a0photos de groupe plus bas\u00a0\u00bb.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Les femelles sont moins \u00e9videntes \u00e0 identifier au premier coup d’\u0153il parce qu’elles ne portent pas de vraies taches alaires, les deux ailes sont simplement fum\u00e9es<\/em> pour les sujets \u00e2g\u00e9s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mais leurs yeux \u00e0 double coloration, leur position et situation dans la v\u00e9g\u00e9tation, et leur nervation caract\u00e9ristique permettent de les identifier facilement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ces femelles ont un comportement tr\u00e8s particulier et amusant lors de la ponte, ce qui donne \u00e0 l’esp\u00e8ce le nom anglais de Old World Twister : comme on le voit sur cette mauvaise photo<\/a>, elles larguent leurs \u0153ufs dans l’eau d’un bref coup d’abdomen, comme bien d’autres esp\u00e8ces de Libellulidae ; mais aussit\u00f4t apr\u00e8s elles effectuent un demi-tour sur place pour pondre \u00e0 nouveau ou font encore un autre demi-tour avant de pondre dans la direction initiale, et ceci des dizaines de fois. Une danse vraiment \u00e9tonnante !
Ci-dessous une tr\u00e8s jeune femelle aux yeux encore tr\u00e8s p\u00e2les dont les ailes encore brillantes accrochent un beau reflet dor\u00e9 :<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sa distribution g\u00e9ographique est gigantesque, toute l’Afrique sauf le nord, jusqu’au\u2026 Japon et au sud l’Australie.

C’est amusant de constater comme on les trouve parfois en nombre, exactement dans la m\u00eame position : <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00c9tymologie<\/strong>
Pour l’origine du nom de genre, une explication assez peu satisfaisante est fournie dans Suhling et Martens. Tholymis<\/strong> viendrait des deux mots grecs thorax<\/em>, pas besoin de traduction, et lygaios<\/em>, pour ombrag\u00e9<\/em> ou sombre<\/em>. Seulement, ce sont plut\u00f4t les ailes qui semblent porter une zone sombre ou nuageuse<\/em>. Et Fabricius ne fait aucune r\u00e9f\u00e9rence \u00e0 un \u00ab\u00a0corps sombre\u00a0\u00bb, qu’il qualifie simplement de jaunissant<\/em>. Fabricius voulait-il dire que le corps est \u00e0 l’ombre de ces ailes teint\u00e9es…
Tillarga est une \u00e9nigme, sans doute un nom propre, car il a d’abord \u00e9t\u00e9 \u00e9crit avec une majuscule, sous la forme Tillarga<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
