Platycypha caligata (Chlorocyphidae) \u00e9tait pour moi une des cibles prioritaires de ce voyage et il a fallu attendre presque la fin du s\u00e9jour pour le trouver. Les Chlorocyphidae ont tous un habitus tr\u00e8s particulier avec leur appendice sur le clypeus (juste en dessous du front), et celui -ci, s’il n’a pas les ailes d\u00e9cor\u00e9es de certains de ses cousins asiatiques n’a pas \u00e0 se plaindre pour le reste de son habit !<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Il se trouvait sur un tr\u00e8s petit bras de l’Okavango<\/a> qui traverse le lodge de Popa Falls, une zone de rapides dans une zone bois\u00e9e, et mar\u00e9cageuse par d\u00e9bordement. Je n’ai jamais vraiment pu les approcher correctement en raison de leur timidit\u00e9 et surtout de la configuration difficile du terrain et du risque de chute.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pour ajouter \u00e0 leurs charmes on note les pattes bicolores aux larges tibias ; elles sont rouges-orang\u00e9 sur leur face externe et jaun\u00e2tres sur leur face interne. Elles sont exhib\u00e9es dans la danse que m\u00e8nent les m\u00e2les pour s\u00e9duire les femelles, car c’est une des rares esp\u00e8ces d’odonates \u00e0 montrer un comportement de s\u00e9duction (1), ce qui leur vaut le nom anglais bien m\u00e9rit\u00e9 de Dancing jewel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ces larges pattes sont \u00e9galement partiellement \u00e0 l’origine du nom de genre : le grec platys<\/em> signifie large<\/em>, soulignant les larges tibias (comme pour nos Platycnemis europ\u00e9eens), tandis que kyphos signifie bossu<\/em> (cyphose…) pour le renflement pr\u00e9sent sur le clypeus.
Caligata vient du latin caligatus<\/em> qui signifie \u00ab\u00a0chauss\u00e9 comme un soldat\u00a0\u00bb pour les pattes si particuli\u00e8res de l’esp\u00e8ce.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Les m\u00e2les mesurent 29 \u00e0 34 mm.
Les femelles pour spectaculaires qu’elles soient en raison de leur aspect massif et de leur excroissance sur la face sont ternes, loin des couleurs \u00e9clatantes des m\u00e2les matures. Noter les pt\u00e9rostigmas bicolores.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Apr\u00e8s un accouplement qui dure environ une minute elles vont pondre sur les bois flott\u00e9s ou les racines des arbres ; les larves sont bien s\u00fbr adapt\u00e9es au courant rapide qu’elles doivent affronter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

J’ai eu \u00e9galement le plaisir d’observer un jeune sujet, tout juste \u00e9merg\u00e9, dont les couleurs, comme presque toujours, rappellent celles des femelles matures. On retrouve d’ailleurs les pt\u00e9rostigmas bicolores.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On trouve l’esp\u00e8ce essentiellement en Afrique de l’Est et en Afrique centrale, de l’\u00c9thiopie \u00e0 l’Afrique du Sud. En Namibie elle est limit\u00e9e \u00e0 la bande de Caprivi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
