À première vue, l'identification d'Orthetrum microstigma semble évidente ; il suffit de constater la petite taille de ses ptérostigmas. Voilà la théorie ; la pratique, sur le terrain ou plus tard, sur l'écran, est beaucoup plus incertaine.
