Tetrathemis camerunensis fait partie des huit espèces africaines d’un genre qui en comprend 14 dans le monde ; il est également présent en Asie et en Océanie. Les espèces africaines pourraient un jour rejoindre le genre Neophlebia, aujourd’hui disparu, mais que Selys avait créé pour y placer Tetrathemis polleni. Sjöstedt a d’ailleurs décrit cette espèce
